Offering a flexible cabin, roomy accommodations and a smooth ride, the 2017 Honda Pilot is a top choice among midsize SUVs. The Pilot provides three rows of family-friendly seating, and its available all-wheel drive gives you the upper hand on the roads in punishing winter weather.

The Honda Pilot receives a couple of useful updates for 2017. The Pilot is now available with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. The crossover also benefits from a new fingerprint-resistant touch screen and an expanded array of interior color choices.

Five trims are available: LX, EX, EX-L, Touring and the range-topping Elite. All trims except Elite models come standard with front-wheel drive. The Elite trim is offered solely with all-wheel drive, which is optional on all other trims.

All trims except Elite models seat eight passengers. The Elite trim comes with second-row captain’s chairs that reduce seating capacity to seven.

The 2017 Honda Pilot’s sheet metal is modern and sporty, with fluid lines that reflect a departure from the boxiness of the previous generation. Standard halogen headlights flank a winged grille, and overlook a body-colored front bumper. Deep character lines add dimension to the Pilot’s profile, and standard LED brake lights slice into a broad hatch in the rear.

Base-model Pilots come with 18-inch wheels, a capless fuel filler, rear privacy glass and power-adjustable side mirrors. The list of available features includes heated side mirrors, a power tailgate, fog lights, a one-touch power sunroof, an upgraded panoramic sunroof, roof rails and LED headlights.

The best family haulers provide flexible interiors, and the Pilot easily meets this requirement with a cabin can be configured to suit varying passenger and cargo needs. Numerous bins provide a plethora of storage opportunities, and all three rows deliver comfortable seating for adults. Up to 16.5 cubic feet of cargo capacity is available behind the third row, and capacity swells to up to 46.8 cubic feet with the third row folded. The Pilot offers up to 83.9 cubic feet of cargo capacity with the second and third rows folded.

Standard features include a tilt-and-telescoping steering column, air conditioning, rear-seat heater ducts and a 60/40-split third-row seat that folds flat. Interior upgrades include tri-zone automatic climate control, second-row seats with one-touch adjustment, leather upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, ambient LED lighting, a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated and ventilated front seats and heated second-row captain’s chairs.

Despite its sizable dimensions, the 2017 Honda Pilot feels nimble and tidy on the road. A six-speed automatic transmission governs LX, EX and EX-L models, while the Pilot Touring and Elite feature a nine-speed automatic with paddle shifters. All models are motivated by a 3.5-liter V6 providing 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. The Pilot achieves fuel economy of up to 20/27 mpg city/highway with front-wheel drive and up to 19/26 mpg with all-wheel drive.

Front-wheel-drive Pilots can tow up to 3,500 pounds, and this capacity increases to 5,000 pounds for all-wheel-drive models.

The 2017 Honda Pilot comes with a solid array of standard and available technology features. Base modes are equipped with a 5-inch color LCD screen, a rearview camera, Bluetooth connectivity, a USB audio interface an auxiliary input jack and a seven-speaker sound system.

The list of technology upgrades includes an 8-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone mirroring, SMS text message functionality, a navigation system, a rear entertainment system, satellite radio, HD radio and a premium sound system. A full suite of driver-assistive technology is available, including adaptive cruise control, collision mitigation braking, road departure mitigation and a blind spot information system.
