Launched by Hyundai for the 2017 model year, the Genesis marque is a fresh and exciting arrival in the premium-car market. The 2017 Genesis G90 is the brand’s flagship sedan, and it impresses with generous feature content and a poised ride. Stepping in as a replacement of sorts of the outgoing Hyundai Equus, the G90 offers a pleasing luxury-car experience at a relatively accessible price.

The Genesis G90 is a large sedan offering seating for five passengers. An automatic transmission is standard, and both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive are available. This premium sedan is offered in 3.3T Premium and 5.0 Ultimate trims.

Just as clothing makes the man, so too does sheet metal make the luxury car, and the 2017 Genesis G90 is certainly dressed to impress. The car’s exterior looks opulent and expensive, choosing a path of understated discretion over flashy ostentatiousness. It’s the kind of sedan that would appear perfectly at home in the garage of a tech billionaire or real estate baron.

A six-cornered grille covers most of the car’s front fascia, and it’s bordered by lengthy xenon headlights that extend over the fenders. The sedan’s lower fascia is brightened by standard LED daytime running lights. In profile, the G90 looks taut and strong, with chiseled surfaces and character lines that bisect the car from wheel to wheel. The G90’s rear view is highlighted by gleaming LED taillights, a wide body-colored bumper and a standard hands-free power trunk lid.

The list of standard features on base models includes 19-inch wheels, a sunroof, LED turn signal indicators and puddle lights with the Genesis logo. All models come with heated and power-folding side mirrors equipped with auto-dimming functionality.

Within the 2017 Genesis G90’s cabin, you’ll find all the perks and niceties you’d expect from a luxury sedan, executed with thoughtfulness and precision. Both rows of seating offer a spacious environment for passengers, and legroom is especially abundant. Materials quality is first rate, and the cabin is swaddled in supple leathers and attractive metal accents. Fit and finish in our G90 5.0 Ultimate test car was excellent, and all components were put together with flawless attention to detail.

Accessing the trunk is a breeze thanks to the standard hands-free trunk lid, and the trunk provides 15.7 cubic feet for storage. This bests the capacity of rivals such as the Lexus LS (13.9 cubic feet), but falls just short of the 16.3 cubic feet offered by the 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedan.

Standard features include butter-soft Nappa leather upholstery, a 22-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats and tri-zone automatic climate control. Available upgrades include rear vanity mirrors and power-adjustable ventilated rear seats with memory functions.

The G90 comes standard with rear-wheel drive, and all-wheel drive is available on both trims. All models are governed by an eight-speed automatic transmission, and two engines are offered. Base models come with a twin-turbocharged 3.3-liter V6 good for 365 horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque, and both all-wheel-drive and rear-wheel-drive models with this engine have an EPA rating of 17/24 mpg. Stepping up to the 5.0 Ultimate trim gets you a 5.0-liter V8 capable of providing 420 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. The engine achieves fuel economy of 16/24 mpg with rear-wheel drive and 15/23 mpg with all-wheel drive.

Four drive modes are available: Eco, Smart, Sport and Individual. Eco mode is focused on maximizing fuel economy, while Smart mode adapts the car’s settings to deliver the best driving experience for the terrain. Sport mode delivers a performance-oriented driving experience, while Individual mode allows drivers to customize various settings based on their personal preferences.

Our G90 test car provided the poised and unruffled ride quality that’s a hallmark of the top luxury sedans. We cruised over a road filled with potholes with nary a jolt felt in the cabin. Our 5.0 Ultimate review vehicle was equipped with the available V8, and it provided robust power that unspooled in a fluid and refined manner. The Genesis G90 was a joy to drive, providing quick acceleration and an agreeable, eager-to-please temperament.

The G90’s array of technology features are at the leading edge of the curve. Base models come with a head-up display, wireless device charging, satellite radio, HD radio, an MP3 player and a navigation system that utilizes a 12.3-inch screen. The navigation system in our test car featured attractive graphics and quick response times, and it was a pleasure to use.

Rain-sensing windshield wipers are standard on the G90, and they came in handy during a particularly wet weekend. As we cruised through a downpour, the wipers adjusted their pace to keep step with how heavily the rain was falling, speeding up when rainfall mounted and slowing when precipitation dwindled to a light drizzle.

The list of standard features also includes Bluetooth phone and audio streaming, a USB input, an auxiliary audio jack and keyless entry and ignition. All models feature a 17-speaker surround-sound audio system, and our test car’s stereo provided clear and sharp sound quality. Genesis Connected Services is featured on all G90 models, and this telematics system provides perks such as remote vehicle access, roadside assistance and stolen vehicle recovery.

In crash tests carried out by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2017 Genesis G90 landed a top score of Good in all crashworthiness evaluations and was given a Top Safety Pick+ designation. The sedan also earned a Superior rating for its arsenal of active safety technology.

A multi-view camera and forward-view camera are standard. We found them immensely useful when parking in public spaces, since they provided a clear view of the painted lines separating parking spots. Other standard driver-assistive safety features include rear cross-traffic alert, driver drowsiness alert, lane-change assist, blind spot detection, front and rear parking sensors and forward collision warning.

The Genesis G90 separates itself from its rivals by offering pricing that’s within reach to a wider range of shoppers. Base models start at $68,100, excluding a $950 destination charge. You can add all-wheel drive to the mix for $2,500. For 5.0 Ultimate models like our test car, pricing starts at $69,700.

The engine offered by the 5.0 Ultimate trim is appealing, but we imagine most buyers will be more than satisfied with the engine that motivates the base model. Given that base G90s come with such a wealth of equipment, there are only a handful of upgrades available. We’d recommend a base model equipped with all-wheel drive if you live in an area that gets rain and snow, and these models start at $70,600.

Our rear-wheel-drive 5.0 Ultimate test car had a total price of $70,650, including destination. When you consider the G90’s wealth of standard equipment and the steep starting prices of competing models like the Audi A8 ($82,500) and Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedan ($96,600), this luxury sedan’s strong value proposition becomes quite clear.

Many luxury-car shoppers value brand cachet. Gorgeous as it is, the Genesis G90 doesn’t have the pedigree of flagship sedans by established luxury marques like BMW or Mercedes-Benz.

However, if you’re looking for a luxury car offering superlative quality at a remarkably reasonable price, you’ll love the 2017 Genesis G90. Offering stellar feature content and meticulous refinement, this stunning sedan has the goods to win hearts and minds in the competitive premium-car segment.
