The 2017 GMC Sierra 1500 offers a unique proposition for customers in the full-size pickup segment: It’s built on the same platform as the mainstream Chevrolet Silverado 1500, but offers a more sophisticated, premium style.

The Sierra 1500 comes with a standard V6 engine for its base and SLE trims, and Sierra SLT and Denali trims feature V8 engines, with two choices available. Regular, double and crew cab configurations are offered for the Sierra, as are rear- and four-wheel drive. Short, standard and long cargo-box sizes are also offered.

GMC also has updated content for the 2017 Sierra in a number of areas. For all models, standard equipment now includes Teen Driver technology to help when there are younger drivers in the family. Active grille shutters and a capless fuel-filler system are also included. Tri-mode power-assist steps are a new option, while low-speed forward automatic braking is new as part of the Sierra’s available Enhanced Driver Alert Package. Two new exterior colors, Dark Slate Metallic and Pepperdust Metallic, debut as well.

Finally, adjustments to GMC’s maximum trailering package has increased Sierra crew-cab towing capacity to 12,500 pounds.

The Sierra 1500 lineup is detailed by standard LED headlight accents, squared-off wheel openings, and CornerStep rear bumpers, which have built-in steps for easier access to the cargo bed. Spray-in and drop-in bed liners, as well as a remote-locking tailgate, are available for increased functionality.

LED headlights, fog lights, taillights and cargo-box lights are available for SLE, SLT and Denali trims. Those upper trims also can be ordered with heated, power-folding and power-adjustable exterior mirrors that have integrated turn signals and approach lamps. As for Sierra wheel offerings, they range from the standard 17-inch design up to the optional 22-inch wheels for the Sierra Denali. GMC distinguishes Sierra trims with their own specific grille designs, although all retain the brand’s center “cutout” element where the hood meets the top of the grille. Additionally, the brand offers the Sierra with Elevation, All Terrain and All Terrain X upgrade packages, each of which has its own specific design enhancements.

A 40/20/40-split bench is standard in the regular-cab Sierra, with front bucket seats and rear bench seating offered in the higher trims and larger cab sizes. Also available are a leather-wrapped and heated steering wheel, and leather and perforated-leather seats in multiple color themes. Upper trims further provide heated and ventilated seating for the driver and front-seat passenger. In terms of cargo space in the cabin, a large center console is standard for Sierra models with front bucket seats, and SLE and SLT trims with front bench seating have lockable under-seat storage compartments. Denali trims have 10-way power-adjustable seating in front and two-position memory for the driver’s seat. In double- and crew-cab Sierra models, the rear seat bottoms also fold up, for extra interior cargo space.

The Sierra’s standard 4.3-liter V6 engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and provides owners with 285 horsepower, 305 pound-feet of torque and a maximum trailer rating of 6,000 pounds. A 5.3-liter V8 engine is standard in SLE and SLT trims, also with a six-speed transmission, and this powertrain delivers 355 horsepower, 383 pound-feet of torque and a top towing capacity of 9,800 pounds. That V8 is standard for the Sierra Denali, but with an eight-speed automatic transmission that results in a 9,300 pound towing capacity. Available for all trims except the base model is a 6.2-liter V8 that’s matched solely with an eight-speed automatic transmission. With this combination, owners can rely on 420 horsepower, 460 pound-feet of torque and a trailering maximum of 12,500 pounds.

The V6-powered Sierra has the highest EPA ratings, of 18/24 mpg city/highway. Ratings for the V8 models start at 16/23 mpg city/highway for the 5.3-liter engine and 15/21 mpg city/highway for the 6.2-liter engine.

The Sierra supplies many of the popular safety technologies that were first introduced on cars, including a rearview camera, forward collision alert, lane-keeping assistance, front and rear parking sensors, and the new low-speed forward automatic-braking system. Moreover, the Sierra can be ordered with a Safety Alert Seat for the driver. If the Sierra’s sensors detect a possible road hazard, the bottom of this seat will vibrate on the appropriate side as another layer of warning. A rear-seat reminder can warn drivers to check the back seat before leaving the Sierra.

The Sierra also has a similarly wide range of infotainment technology on the menu, particularly above the base trim. For example, 7- and 8-inch touch screens are offered for the Sierra’s IntelliLink infotainment system, which can supply Bluetooth connectivity, voice control, navigation, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and a mobile Wi-Fi hot spot with 4G LTE connectivity. A seven-speaker Bose audio system, wireless smartphone charging and a Blu-Ray-compatible rear-seat entertainment system with a 9.2-inch display and two wireless headphones also are available.
