A modern-day muscle car that’s quick to feature style cues from the original, the 2017 Dodge Challenger offers the most powerful engine in the segment and some of the newest technologies.

The Challenger is available only as a two-door coupe, but with four engine choices and multiple trims. A standard V6 is used in the SXT, SXT Plus and GT, while three increasingly powerful V8 engines are available in the R/T, T/A, R/T Plus, R/T Shaker, T/A Plus, R/T Plus Shaker, R/T Scat Pack, T/A 392, 392 HEMI Scat Pack Shaker SRT 392 and SRT Hellcat.

Two of the Challenger grades – GT and T/A – are new for 2017. The first brings all-wheel drive to the segment, the second is a retro-themed performance and design package. Also, all V8-powered Challengers now have a standard active-exhaust system and the latest Uconnect 8.4 infotainment setup with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. In SRT models specifically, the wheels, badging and an LED-illuminated steering wheel have been revised. Other design updates include standard houndstooth cloth seats for SXT, R/T, R/T Shaker and R/T Scat Pack models, along with four new exterior colors.

The Challenger has a fast, streamlined appearance, with a crouching stance so that it looks ready to jump off the starting line at the touch of the accelerator pedal. LEDs are standard for headlight accents, daytime running lights and taillights, and all trims except the SXT and Hellcat come with fog lights. For the Hellcat and T/A models, LED-illuminated “Air Catcher” headlights that bring more air into the engine also are standard. The expected powered sunroof is an option across the lineup.

Dynamic wheel designs are a further highlight for the Challenger, beginning with the standard 18-inch wheels then also including 20-inch wheels in 11 different designs. Dodge also provides a wide variety of graphics and aerodynamic details to distinguish the different Challenger models. The Shaker models, for example, are named for their hoods. These show off the scooped air intakes connected to their V8 engines, which visibly “shake” with the power on.

The Challenger is sharply focused on catering to the driver in the cabin, thanks in part to the design of its center console: A raised “border” between the console and the front passenger seat visually groups the switchgear, shift lever and beverage holders as belonging on the driver’s-side of the interior. Gauges are bold, bright and easy to read, too. Dodge offers “sport” and “performance” seats, with cloth or leather surfaces and, in upper trims, heating and ventilation for the front row. A leather-wrapped steering wheel is standard throughout the Challenger family, and it can be heated as well. Two more performance-oriented steering wheels are standard in higher trims. The SRT models have standard flat-bottomed, racing-style steering wheels.

The Challenger has noticeably more front-row headroom than the 2017 Ford Mustang or Chevrolet Camaro, plus more headroom and legroom in the second row. With a 16.2 cubic foot trunk capacity, the Challenger also leads the segment for cargo volume.

The Challenger also brings a wide range of engines to the marketplace. Standard is a 3.6-liter V6, which produces 305 horsepower and 268 pound-feet of torque while being matched with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Three Hemi V8 engines are optional for the Challenger, each with a standard six-speed manual transmission and available eight-speed automatic. The 5.7-liter unit provides up to 375 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque, and a 6.4-liter engine makes 485 horsepower and 475 pound-feet of torque. Finally, exclusive to the Challenger SRT Hellcat is a 6.2-liter V8 that’s been supercharged to deliver 707 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque.

The 2017 Challenger also offers high-performance infotainment and audio resources. The standard Uconnect 5.0 setup for the car has a 5-inch touch screen, six audio speakers, Bluetooth and voice control, but the attention-getter here is the available all-new Uconnect 8.4 system. It features an 8.4-inch touch screen and enhanced processing power. Also standard with Uconnect 8.4 are Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration and satellite radio. Navigation is optional. Meanwhile, audio options include two systems from Alpine, with six and nine speakers, and a high-end Harman Kardon sound system with 18 speakers, two subwoofers and 900 watts of power. Among the available driver-assistance measures for the Challenger are forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, a blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert and a rearview camera.
