Attractive styling, excellent fuel economy and a premium interior make the 2017 Audi A6 a top pick in the midsize luxury sedan segment. Available with front- or all-wheel-drive, the A6 is a well-mannered premium sedan that rewards the driver at every turn.

The Audi A6 is available in five trim levels: 2.0T Premium, 2.0T Premium Plus, 3.0T Premium Plus, 3.0T Prestige and the range-topping 3.0T Competition, which is new for 2017. The 2017 Audi A6 also drops the diesel-engine option, and all models benefit from subtle exterior design upgrades.

The exterior styling of the Audi A6 is bold, yet restrained. The updated grille, headlights, front bumper and LED taillights look fresh and modern, while the sedan’s relatively conservative lines are faithful to the manufacturer’s past. Signature lighting makes the A6 a standout at night.

The base A6 rides on 18-inch alloy wheels, and 19- and 20-inch wheels are available. A sunroof, automatic xenon headlights and LED running lights are standard. Premium Plus models add power-adjustable heated side mirrors, and the Prestige model includes adaptive LED headlights.

The new-for-2017 3.0T Competition trim arrives with unique 20-inch wheels that frame red brake calipers. The Competition model also adds gloss-black accents, including a special grille and window trim surrounds.

The Audi A6’s cabin is modern and luxurious, and it’s just as restrained as the car’s exterior. The base Premium model’s attractive interior features leather seating surfaces, walnut inlays and aluminum trim elements. The A6 Premium also includes three-zone automatic climate control, aluminum door-sill inlays and heated eight-way power-adjustable front seats with four-way power lumbar support for the driver.

Finding a comfortable driving position is simple, aided by the manual tilt-and-telescoping three-spoke multifunction steering wheel. Front-seat passengers are provided with plenty of leg- and headroom. Rear-seat passengers have lots of room in the A6’s spacious back seats.

Cargo space comes in at 14.1 cubic feet. This is more than you’ll get with the Mercedes-Benz E-Class (13.1 cubic feet), but less than you’ll find in a BMW 5 Series (18.7 cubic feet). The rear seats fold down to allow longer items to extend from the trunk into the cabin, but the small trunk opening can pose a problem when loading heavy, larger items.

The Prestige model includes ventilated front seats, a power trunk, ambient LED interior lighting, manual sunshades for the two rear doors and a power rear window sunshade. The new Competition trim adds a flat-bottom steering wheel and upgraded leather upholstery with contrast stitching.

Optional features include massaging front seats, a heated steering wheel and heated rear seats.

The base A6 2.0T Premium and Premium Plus use a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that creates 252 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. A supercharged 3.0-liter V6 that generates 333 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque motivates the 3.0T Premium Plus and 3.0T Prestige. In the 3.0T Competition trim, the V6 is tuned to provide 340 horsepower. A seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission is standard on all front-wheel-drive models. An eight-speed automatic handles gear changes in the all-wheel-drive models.

The base A6 earns up to 24/34 mpg city/highway, while the all-wheel-drive V6-powered models achieve 21/29 mpg. The A6’s fuel economy is impressive, and the EPA estimates translate well into real-world driving situations.

The A6, even in the base trim, is an excellent daily driver with superb driving dynamics. Audi’s 2.0-liter turbo provides plenty of power for passing. Unlike many smaller turbocharged engines in the segment, the A6 delivers acceleration that is immediate and authoritative. Adding the supercharged V6 and Audi’s highly praised all-wheel-drive system creates a true driver’s car. The sedan handles like a sports car, and it’s well-behaved and rewarding.

The base Audi A6 arrives with a 10-speaker audio system that includes CD, MP3 and Bluetooth capabilities. The system also features satellite radio and a music interface with a Lightning adapter cable for connective Apple devices.

The Premium Plus models add a 14-speaker Bose surround sound system, keyless entry and ignition, voice-controlled navigation, a touch interface with handwriting recognition, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone mirroring, HD radio and traffic information. The Prestige trim adds a head-up display that presents navigation information.

Additional options include a Bang & Olufsen sound system.

The Audi A6 received a Top Safety Pick award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), earning top scores of Good in small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side impact and roof strength tests. When equipped with optional active safety equipment, the A6 also earned an Advanced rating for front crash prevention. Additionally, the Audi A6 received a top five-star overall rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), earning top scores in front, side and rollover crash tests.

All A6 models include a pre-collision system and a rearview camera. Optional safety features include blind spot monitoring, lane keeping assist, a top-view camera system, adaptive cruise control and a night vision camera system.

The base 2017 Audi A6 Premium starts at $47,600, plus a $950 destination charge. The all-wheel-drive V6-powered Premium Plus starts at $58,600, and the new top-trim Competition model starts at $67,600.

Our test model, the 2.0T Premium Plus, was equipped with options such as the 19-inch Sport package ($1,050), and it had a final price of $56,875.

The base A6 represents excellent value in the midsize luxury sedan segment, as it is priced below comparable offerings from BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Comparable midsize luxury sedans rarely include standard leather seating surfaces and walnut inlays, making the A6 Premium a clear value leader in the segment. Unfortunately, adding many of the features that luxury car owners desire will significantly raise the A6’s base price, and well-equipped A6 models can cost as much as $80,000.

The 2017 Audi A6’s attractive styling, luxurious interior, excellent performance and reasonable price tag make it a standout among midsize luxury cars. With a generous back seat that comfortably seats three adults and strong fuel economy, the fun-to-drive Audi A6 offers real-world practicality with enthusiast-pleasing driving dynamics.
