The 2016 Jaguar F-Type welcomes two new features: a six-speed manual transmission and all-wheel drive. Available in coupe and convertible body styles, this sports car comes in four trim levels and offers customers a pair of potent supercharged engines.

Introduced in 2014, the Jaguar F-Type is a two-seat sports car and the spiritual successor to the vaunted E-Type. Designed by Ian Callum, the F-Type features a sinewy body, an exquisite interior, and offers a pair of supercharged engines. All-wheel drive and a six-speed manual transmission are offered for the first time in 2016.

The Jaguar F-Type takes the styling cues of the E-Type and applies them to the 21st century. The new model features the expected long hood, slippery body, curvilinear profile, and adds a massive rear haunch to amplify its signature design.

The 2016 F-Type’s front end features a gaping maw punctuated by fascia scallops and an aerodynamic air dam. Its oversized tear drop headlights are accentuated by boomerang daytime running lights. The creased hood is marked by a pair of air vents.

Functional vent ports, distinctive sport alloy wheels, wrap around taillights with LED lights and a pair of oversized center-mounted exhaust finishers are among the top exterior highlights. The rear hatchback is power operated.

Jaguar makes good use of the interior room, or at least it does so with confined space. Both seats are electronically operated to raise or lower or move forward and back. Passengers with long legs may find their knees touching the dashboard. The seat switches are located on the door and also provide lumbar support.

The resplendent cabin is covered in exquisite double-stitched leather with carbon fiber and other high-end materials present. The layout is clean and uncomplicated, with controls sensibly placed and easy to decipher.

A pair of sporty cowls housing analog displays marks the instrument panel and hem in a digital driver’s information center. Further, the leather-wrapped steering wheel features a flat bottom and has switches to manage secondary driver controls.

At the top of the center stack, a pair of climate control vents ascend from the surface when the F-Type’s ignition is turned on. When the sports car is off, the vents are found flush with the dashboard. A touch-screen color display can be controlled by buttons on either side; voice control is available too. In addition, large sporty dials situated below the display manage the climate control system. Additional switches are organized beneath that.

Located between the seats is the transmission shifter. Nearby, one flick of a switch activates snow or sport modes. Switches controlling the electronic parking brake and manual operation of the rear spoiler are also present. Every coupe model comes with a fixed glass roof; a manually sliding cover is present.

Two vigorous supercharged engine choices await Jaguar F-Type coupe and convertible buyers. Base rear-wheel drive models are powered by a potent 340-horsepower V6 engine. A six-speed manual transmission is standard and an eight-speed automatic is optional. A power-enhanced 380-horsepower version of the V6 comes with the S Coupe and Convertible, which is available in rear- or all-wheel drive.

The rear-wheel drive R Coupe is powered by a substantial, 5.0-liter V8 engine making 550 horsepower. An eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters is standard in the R Coupe and Convertible as well as with all-wheel drive models.

F-Type models with the V6 engine and manual transmission are EPA-rated at 16/24 mpg city/highway. With the automatic, this model is rated 19/28 mpg city/highway. F-Type models with the V8 engine are EPA-rated at 15/23 mpg city/highway. All models take premium grade gasoline.

As tested, a 2016 Jaguar F-Type S Coupe with the manual transmission was delivered. This model offers excellent power and ease of shifting. Jaguar employs a short-throw gearbox for smooth, rapid shifts. The supercharger is activated in the low-end of the power curve and delivers high levels of torque throughout.

Start the engine and a soft growl is heard. Begin moving through the gears and the F-Type quickly responds, leaping from a stop to highway speeds rapidly. Switch to sport mode and the suspension dampers tighten and the exhaust pitch is transformed to a low moan. Continue to work your way up to 70 mph and beyond, taking note of the rising rear spoiler that quickly sets in place. The spoiler, combined with the front splitter, were designed to reduce lift, making this one sleek cat as you make your way down the road.

Jaguar makes use of an adaptive damper system that uses sensors to adjust body roll and pitches up to 100 times a second. It enhances steering and handling to provide a more responsive and agile system. The steering also adjusts to ever changing body roll while the dampers keep the F-Type poised as you put it through its most challenging paces. Adept steering, torque vectoring and a high performance braking system are present. This model moves down the straightaway with authority and handles bends and arcs with precision.

The F-Type’s technology includes a standard, 770-watt Meridian surround sound system composed of 12 speakers, including deep-bass subwoofers. This sophisticated system automatically adjusts audio levels to correspond with adjustments in interior noise. SiriusXM satellite radio, HD Radio and GPS navigation are also standard.

The Jaguar InControl system provides vehicle connectivity by means of a smartphone. The system can adjust climate control, activate or deactivate the locks, call for roadside assistance or summon emergency help.

The 2016 Jaguar F-Type is not yet rated by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not provided a rating either.

The F-Type comes with a suite of air bags and also has electronic brake-force distribution, traction control, stability control and available safety features such as a blind spot monitor, reverse traffic detection and automatic high beams. Convertible editions are equipped with a rollover protection system.

Pricing for the 2016 Jaguar F-Type starts at $65,000. The rear-wheel drive S Coupe costs $77,300 and the all-wheel drive version is priced at $84,800. The F-Type R costs $103,600. Add approximately $3,100 to each model when considering the convertible version.

Various package options, including climate control and leather upgrades, can add thousands of dollars to any model. The available carbon ceramic brake pack adds $14,450 to the price alone and is available on all but the base model.

The 2016 Jaguar F-Type is the halo model for this British marque. It provides everything that you would expect for a car in its class and successfully advances the brand’s mystique. An upgraded maintenance plan and an extension of the warranties are new for 2016.

The F-Type’s competition includes the Porsche 911, Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, Aston Martin V8 Vantage, BMW M6 and the Mercedes-Benz AMG SL63. Other models to consider include the Nissan GT-R, Dodge Viper and the Audi R8.
