The 2016 Cadillac CT6 reimagines what a full-size luxury sedan should be, with a bold new design sets it in a league of its own. With leather-wrapped seats, a trio of engine choices and an abundance of standard tech features, the all-new CT6 is Cadillac’s well-stated answer to the best-selling luxury large cars from European competitors.
The 2016 Cadillac CT6 is a five-passenger, full-size luxury sedan. It’s available in four trims: base, Luxury, Premium Luxury and Platinum. This rear- or all-wheel drive sedan may be powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four cylinder, a 3.6-liter V6 or a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6, and all engine choices are teamed with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Cadillac’s engine and trim choices provide buyers with plenty of options. Fuel-conscious consumers will want to investigate the nicely appointed 2.0-liter turbo model, while enthusiasts will find the 404-horsepower, twin-turbo V6 quite satisfying. Starting at $54,490, pricing is competitive for the segment. When configured conservatively, the CT6 represents excellent value for a full-size luxury sedan.
The 2016 CT6 elevates Cadillac’s recent design efforts. Bold, muscular lines and rakish angles are complemented by softer elements, which result in sheet metal that exudes style and affluence while hinting at superlative performance potential.
Vertical LED lights flank the CT6’s grille and an oversized Cadillac crest sits proudly in the center. The long hood blends into a cabin that ends with a gently sloped C-pillar. The integrated rear spoiler finishes off a near-perfect design.
The CT6’s refinements include standard 18-inch wheels, heated sideview mirrors, LED taillights, acoustic laminated glass and a capless fueling system.
Higher trim levels include concierge lighting, illuminated door handles, power folding sideview mirrors, 20-inch wheels and a ground-effects package. Other options include a sunroof with independent front and rear shade control and a hands-free power trunk lid.
The 2016 CT6 is designed to embody prestige, and Cadillac’s attention to detail is evident throughout the finely appointed cabin. The generous interior dimensions create an open and inviting environment that reduces driver and passenger fatigue. Rear passengers have ample room to spread out and relax in the gorgeous cabin. Cadillac has succeeded in crafting a credible full-size luxury sedan.
Finding a comfortable driving position is easy, thanks to the standard 14-way power-adjustable driver’s seat. Available features include 20-way adjustable front seats, plush leather interior packages, ventilated seats, a heated steering wheel, a rear-seat entertainment system and much more.
Cargo capacity is 15.3 cubic feet. We imagine this will be generous enough for most shoppers, but there are roomier choices in this segment. The optional power liftgate and ease of loading make the CT6 an excellent companion for cross-country road trips.
The base rear-wheel drive Cadillac CT6 is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 265 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. All-wheel drive is available. The lineup also includes a normally aspirated 3.6-liter V6 rated at 335 horsepower and 284 pound-feet of torque. Enthusiasts will appreciate Cadillac’s twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6, which generates 404 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque. All engines are governed by an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Fuel economy is excellent in turbocharged base model and good for the segment across the board. Turbocharged 2.0-liter model earns 22/31 mpg city/highway. All-wheel drive variants with the 3.6-liter V6 yield 18/27 mpg city/highway. Top-trim models with all-wheel drive and the twin-turbo V6 earn 18/26 mpg city/highway.
Time behind the wheel of the all-new CT6 is enjoyable. The suspension is soft, comfortable and forgiving. An optional Active Chassis package adjusts the suspension every millisecond, maintaining a smooth ride. The package also includes a sophisticated four-wheel steering system that works with the CT6’s all-wheel drive for direct, precise steering with very little effort. An available Magnetic Ride Control suspension enhances the driving environment by providing additional comfort and maneuverability.
Our test CT6 with the twin-turbo V6 offered excellent acceleration and braking. Although the CT6’s large size and soft suspension make it more luxurious than athletic, the powerful turbocharged engine and quick-shifting eight-speed automatic provide excellent straight-line performance that makes highway passing a breeze.
The 2016 Cadillac CT6 offers a high level of standard technology. The base Bose eight-speaker audio system sounds great and the available 34-speaker Bose Panaray system is one of the best-sounding on the market. The standard CUE infotainment system offers smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as satellite radio, Bluetooth and USB connectivity and wireless phone charging. All CT6 models arrive with a suite of OnStar programs that include guidance and a 4G LTE internet connection with a wireless hot spot.
Available equipment includes navigation, a CD player, adaptive cruise control, a head-up display and more. Additionally, the CT6 can be optioned to include a rearview mirror with an active camera system that projects whatever is behind the car on the screen.
Cadillac’s CUE infotainment system exhibits a level of control and connectivity that we’ve never before seen in a General Motors product. We have often grumbled about the CUE system in the past, but Cadillac’s improvements have yielded a system that is easier to use and more powerful than ever.
The CT6 features ample standard safety equipment and available active safety technology. This Cadillac includes a full battery of air bags, a rearview camera, front and rear park assist, antilock brakes and stability control.
The Cadillac CT6 has a long list of available active safety systems and enhancements. Highlights include surround vision, which provides a birds-eye view around the vehicle, as well as pedestrian detection, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane keeping assist and lane departure warning.
The 2016 Cadillac CT6 starts at $54,490, including a $995 destination charge. The base CT6 arrives with plenty of standard features and represents excellent value within the segment. Adding to the base model’s value is its excellent fuel economy.
By spending $59,390, you can step up to the Luxury trim. The modest price increase adds 19-inch alloy wheels, an upgraded audio system, a host of active safety technology and the ability to add top-trim available equipment.
The top Platinum model with the twin-turbo V6 and all-wheel drive starts at $88,460, including destination. It’s loaded with standard equipment, including adaptive cruise control, night vision, an upgraded 34-speaker audio system, four-zone climate control, a sunroof, 20-inch wheels and the Active Chassis package that includes four-wheel steering and Magnetic Ride Control.
The 2016 Cadillac CT6 represents excellent value and provides a compelling option in a segment historically dominated by German automakers. Those looking at the Audi A8, Mercedes-Benz S-Class and BMW 7 Series will also want to take a peek at the 2016 CT6. It may be a newcomer, but Cadillac’s efforts are grabbing attention from reviewers and consumers alike.
The first time we saw the 2016 Cadillac CT6 in person, we were taken aback by the sheer size and beauty of the sedan. Its proportions are nearly perfect, and its curb appeal is almost universal. Brand enthusiasts may not be quickly won over by Cadillac’s efforts to rob sales from long-time German favorites, but make no mistake: The CT6 is fully competitive within the full-size luxury segment.
