The 2016 Audi A6 is a midsize luxury car that’s sleek, polished and elegant. The A6 offers room for five and an interior satiated with high-end materials. This dapper sedan offers two boosted gasoline engines and a must-have all-wheel drive system, providing an ideal balance of luxury, efficiency and performance.

Among luxury sedans, the 2016 Audi A6 relies on turbocharged and supercharged gasoline engines and available all-wheel drive. Legendary Audi style and quality is evident at first glance and throughout the interior, making this midsize luxury sedan a strong competitor in its segment.

For 2016, the Audi A6 gains refreshed exterior styling, an updated infotainment system and available Wi-Fi connectivity with a new 4G LTE hot spot. There’s also more power from the base engine and the available supercharged V6.

The 2016 Audi A6 receives a conservative styling refresh with changes made to the front and rear fascia. Up front, the fascia features a new LED headlight design, along with an updated grille and bumper. At the rear, new LED taillights and integrated trapezoidal tailpipes are present.

I’ve long admired Audi’s exterior styling, especially on sedans like the A6, which offers a sleek and elegant persona without being pretentious. If the A6 was an animal its equivalent would be a gazelle, thanks to its stately presence and swift movement, the latter is especially apparent in the related Audi S6 sedan.

Automotive critics often point to Mercedes-Benz and BMW as examples of fine European craftsmanship, but Audi is on an equal plane with both. The A6’s interior design is at once straightforward, elegant and laid out in an uncomplicated manner. A pair of new interior colors along with four additional inlays and two design collections are new for 2016.

The seats are plush and supportive, providing sufficient room for five adults. Indeed, rear legroom is one of the A6’s best attributes, as it supplies more space than competing models.

On the other hand, the A6’s 14.1-cubic-foot trunk is small by any standard. Fortunately, the seat backs fold and provide access to the trunk.

The dash-mounted pop-screen for Audi’s MMI infotainment system is one of the better ones in the industry. It provides crisp lettering and pictures on a black screen with an easy-to-decipher menu. Whereas some manufacturers implement a tabletlike display for a familiar layout, the Audi design is all its own and easy to follow.

The 2016 A6’s two gasoline engines offer solid choices for consumers. A new turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine making 252 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque is standard. This engine is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission in front-wheel drive models and an eight-speed automatic transmission in all-wheel drive models. This model has an EPA rating of up to 24/35 mpg city/highway.

The second engine is a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 that produces 333 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque.

The V6 engine comes paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. As equipped, this model is EPA-rated at 20/30 mpg city/highway.

Audi offers three trim levels with the A6: Premium, Premium Plus and Prestige. We tested a Premium Plus model with the smaller engine and Quattro all-wheel drive. The new base engine reflects a generational update to provide more power and improved efficiency.

Credit Audi for developing a turbocharged engine with minimal lag. Step on the gas and a generous amount of power is delivered to all four wheels, with sufficient boost for passing purposes. The ride is firm, and while the steering isn’t especially well connected, the handling is excellent.

Take this sedan on twisty roads and it maintains its composure thanks to its sport-tuned suspension. For such a small engine, the power it delivers should be sufficient for most shoppers. The Audi A6 is quiet, with very low levels of noise, vibration and harshness.

Audi fans will be happy to know that for 2016, the A6 now offers a pair of proper USB ports except on the base model. Gone are the attendant cables that made it possible for some, but not all smartphones to connect. The USB ports are found under the front armrest in the storage compartment along with an auxiliary input jack.

Another change for 2016 is an upgrade to the A6’s infotainment system, which was already one of its star attributes.

Audi’s MMI interface now provides a 4G LTE data connection, a faster processor and an upgraded navigation system. Audi integrates Google Maps with its navigation system, allowing for satellite maps to overlay road markings for a crisp visualization.

A standard 10-speaker audio system is upgraded to a 14-speaker Bose audio package with the Prestige trim. An available 15-speaker Bang and Olufsen system has an output of 1,300 watts and will likely be the preferred choices for audiophiles.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) awarded the 2016 Audi A6 with its highest Top Safety Pick+ award. The A6 received that designation for its Advanced rating for front crash prevention and its top scores of Good in all five crashworthiness categories (small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints and seats).

The A6’s safety record starts with Audi’s choice of materials. The automaker makes generous use of aluminum and steel to present a lightweight, but rigid body.

Front, front-side and available rear air bags are among the basic safety features employed. Available driver assist features include automatic high beams, blind spot monitoring, lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise control and forward collision mitigation.

The base price for a front-wheel drive Audi A6 comes in at $46,200. Premium Plus models cost from $49,900 to $57,500 when the V6 is chosen. The top-of-the-line A6 Prestige retails from $61,600.

A6 Prestige models equipped with the S line Sport package ($1,800), Driver Assistance package ($2,550) and the Individual Contour Seating package ($3,450) retail for about $70,000. Additional upgrades to the audio system and a night vision package can lift the final price to about $75,000.

Customers with more modest budgets should be satisfied with the smaller, but still capable four-cylinder engine. Thus, a well-equipped all-wheel drive model is obtainable for under $60,000. That makes for a reasonable price point for a midsize luxury sedan.

Despite not having diesel engines available for the 2016 model year, Audi has a pair of accomplished gasoline engines at the ready. Low fuel prices at the time of publication certainly help relieve the loss of the diesel engine.

Midsize luxury sedan shoppers might also consider the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Cadillac CTS, Jaguar XF, BMW 5 Series, Lexus GS, Acura RLX and Infiniti Q70 when evaluating this model. The Hyundai Genesis and Chrysler 300 are two other models worth considering.

In the end, the 2016 Audi A6 stands successfully on its own merits, providing an ideal blend of European craftsmanship, technology and performance. It also comes exquisitely wrapped in a handsome package.
