The fully redesigned 2015 Nissan Murano features a sleek exterior, better fuel economy and an upgraded and more ergonomic interior.
The Nissan Murano has always been known for its stylish looks and roomy interior. Continuing with that trend, Nissan has updated the new 2015 Murano with a sleeker, more limousine-like exterior design that looks more European. This great-looking exterior is enhanced by a more refined and ergonomic interior with higher quality materials. Add in better fuel economy and a more comfortable ride and the 2015 Nissan Murano seems a winner.
The 2015 Murano is slightly larger than its predecessor, with the size gain translating directly to more interior space. Four trim levels are offered, which are all available with either front- or all-wheel drive. The S trim is the base level for the new Murano, but comes with a good suite of standard equipment, including a rearview camera, Bluetooth, satellite radio, smartphone app integration and dual-zone automatic climate control. Options include navigation with added connectivity.
In the SV trim, the S trim with Navigation is upgraded to include roof rails, fog lamps, and a more adjustable, powered driver’s seat. Other updates are also added and options include a Premium package that adds a panoramic sunroof and upgraded audio.
The Murano SL comes standard with a Bose stereo system and blind spot monitoring, as well as heated front seats and leather upholstery. Several other additions are also included for comfort and safety, including Nissan’s popular Around View Monitor system.
The Platinum trim adds all options from the SL trim plus features like heated second-row seats, larger wheels and LED headlights. An optional Technology package for SL and Platinum trims adds driver assistance features like adaptive cruise control and a forward collision warning system.
Most of the exterior design of the 2015 Murano is based on a speedy, futuristic appeal that may marginalize it for some buyers. Most we spoke with when we had the vehicle as a press loan seemed to like the look. The chrome accents and dark windows add to this appeal.
The Murano’s sleek styling also improves aerodynamics, giving it one of the best coefficients of drag in the business. That adds up to better efficiency as well as a much quieter ride on the highway.
The interior of the new 2015 Murano is much improved over previous generations. This is the first year that Nissan’s Zero Gravity seating has been added, which improves driver and front passenger comfort immensely. The second row is more adjustable as well, while the overall interior experience is upgraded through better materials and more ergonomic styling.
Multiple tones of color and materials give the mid- and upper-trim Murano a sophisticated look that rivals many luxury vehicles. Smart storage and improved visibility are also to be had.
The Murano’s chief weak point had previously been a smaller cargo area than some rivals. That’s been changed with the rear cargo area now offering 39.6 cubic feet of room. Folding the second row down expands the space to 69.9 cubic feet.
The 2015 Murano only has one engine and transmission option: a 3.5-liter V6 that’s mated to a continuously variable transmission (CVT). This combination, however, offers a good balance of power and fuel economy at 24 mpg combined. The surprise here is that fuel economy is the same on front- and all-wheel drive models, which both get an EPA-estimated 21/28 mpg city/highway.
On the road, the Murano’s V6 engine performs admirably, outputting 260 horsepower. It powers to freeway speeds without hesitation and glides through town confidently. It’s a well-balanced offering.
Technology in the new Murano centers around the latest iteration of Nissan Connect system. This is a smart infotainment offering that most will find easy to use for basic tasks and needs. Some expanded features may become confusing, but for the most part, Nissan Connect is a user-friendly option within the infotainment technology segment.
Other technologies can be had to improve safety and visibility. These include the popular and very useful Around View Monitor, which shows a 360-degree view around the vehicle when it’s in reverse.
As of this writing, the 2015 Murano has not been rated by either the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
However, the 2015 Nissan Murano includes safety and driver assistance features like a standard rearview camera, as well as options like blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control and forward collision warning.
The 2015 Murano is cost-competitive with rivals as a new purchase, with a strong value incentive given the higher-grade interior and trim offerings. Fuel economy is also good for a V6-powered crossover, though many four-cylinder rivals use less fuel.
Resale value may be the only downside to the Murano, which may change as the new model proliferates. In the past, the Murano has been only average in resale and trade-in value retention, affecting its score here.
Nearly everything about the Nissan Murano has been improved for the 2015 model year. It’s a smart, good-looking and nice-driving crossover. The 2015 Nissan Murano is a great offering in the midsize segment.
