Overview

By Aaron Turpen (Last Updated 12/12/2017)

After a year off to regain its bearings, the redesigned 2015 Honda Fit is back with better fuel economy and more interior space.

The Honda Fit was absent in the 2014 model year, but has returned for 2015 with a newly refreshed exterior look, a bigger interior, better fuel economy and new technology features. The peppy low-end torque, flexible and versatile interior and fun style are still there, which defines this subcompact car.

Notable updates have been made to the engine and transmission, and new features include smartphone app integration and the exclusive Honda LaneWatch blind spot camera system.

Exterior

The 2015 Honda Fit continues with the wedge shape of its predecessors, but adds more rounded edges and a more sophisticated front fascia and side panels to create a better look. This is more contemporary, but not so grown up that it loses its youthful appeal. The Fit is one of the only vehicles in this class that is available only as a five-door hatchback. Competitors like the Chevrolet Sonic, Ford Fiesta and Kia Rio are available in both sedan and hatchback body styles.

Few who see the new 2015 Fit will mistake it for any other car on the road.

Interior

Although the body length is shorter than previous generations, the 2015 Fit still has a larger interior than the outgoing model. The larger interior space mostly translates to better legroom in the back seat, which is now large enough to accommodate taller passengers without cramping the front row. Luggage space is still excellent and the unique Magic Seat still folds forward and then tilts to maximize cargo space. This makes the Fit capable of carrying a full mountain bike without leaving the hatch open. Few others in this segment can boast that kind of capability.

Interior fit and finish is also much improved in the 2015 Honda Fit. Materials are more upscale and hard plastics and flat surfaces are minimized. Several options for upgrade are available, including heated leather seats and rear cabin climate vents that are an unusual plus for a subcompact car. The seats in the base model are comfortable, but still a bit jarring after a long ride, which isn’t unusual in this segment. Upgraded seating options are more plush than expected, however.

Performance

A 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine still occupies the space under the hood, but this newly-revised engine outputs 130 horsepower through either a new six-speed manual transmission or a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The manual is standard in LX and EX models while the CVT is optional (standard in EX-L models).

The EPA gives the 2015 Fit a fuel economy rating of 29/37 mpg city/highway with the six-speed manual. With the CVT, Fit EX and EX-L models get 32/38 mpg. The entry-level LX model with the CVT gets slightly better fuel economy due to its lighter weight. These fuel economy estimates are better than many in the segment and on par with the best on the market.

To go along with this great fuel economy, however, is that signature Honda peppiness from a stop. The engine is punchy and feels quick at lower speeds, giving the Fit a sporty feel when driven around town.

Technology

Bluetooth is standard in the 2015 Honda Fit, and the upper trim levels boast a lot of new technology. The HondaLink infotainment system, smartphone app integration and 7-inch touch screen are unusually high-end features for a car at this price point. Access to social media apps, audio options, and more are all had with HondaLink.

Other great options include the new Honda LaneWatch camera system for blind spot monitoring on the road.

LaneWatch uses a camera mounted in the right-side mirror. When the turn signal indicator for a right-hand lane change is given, the camera activates and shows that lane on the touch screen. This eliminates any blind spots on that side and makes the lane change easier. The driver only needs to get used to checking the screen as well as the mirror to make the turn.

Safety

The 2015 Fit comes with a suite of standard safety features such as traction control, front side airbags, side curtain airbags, and antilock brakes. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) named the 2015 Honda Fit a Top Safety Pick. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the 2015 Honda Fit its highest overall rating of five stars.

Cost-Effectiveness

Most Honda vehicles are a good purchase decision as they hold their resale and trade-in values well. The Fit is no exception. A higher price of entry, however, especially with the coveted technology extras, does affect this somewhat. Overall, though, the 2015 Fit is considered a good, cost-effective option in the subcompact segment.

Overall

The redesigned 2015 Honda Fit is a big leap forward for the model and will likely see popularity in the subcompact segment. While other manufacturers have also brought great vehicles, the Fit continues to stand out with distinct styling, excellent versatility and impressive fuel economy.
