The 2015 Audi Q5 is the middle model in the luxurious “Q” line, representing a series of crossover utility vehicles featuring standard quattro all-wheel drive. Gasoline and diesel engine options provide the right blend of performance and efficiency for this model.
Available in three trim levels, the 2015 Audi Q5 is a five-passenger, medium-size luxury crossover utility vehicle. Turbocharged and supercharged power from gasoline and diesel engine choices ensure a spirited ride across the Q5 range. All-wheel drive is standard and three trim levels are available.
The Audi Q5 features a waterfall grille offset by xenon plus headlights with LED daytime running lights. The visage is as elegant as it is athletic with strong shoulders, upright pillars and a sculpted profile. To the rear is a spoiler, wraparound LED taillights and dual exhaust ports.
All 2015 Q5 models — Premium, Premium Plus and Prestige — come with front and rear fog lights, aluminum roof rails and a power tailgate. Further, the Premium Plus edition adds a panoramic sunroof and the Prestige model brings in LED turn indicator lights, which are integrated into the exterior side mirrors.
Standard 18-inch 5-spoke aluminum wheels are shod within all-season tires. Larger wheels and an available S Line package bring in design changes that include headlight washers, matte black aluminum roof rails and S Line decor.
Like other Audi interiors, the Q5 has a straightforward layout that makes use of refined materials and does so without clutter. The Audi Q5 seats five in comfort and has supportive bucket seats up front and a 60/40 split-folding bench seat to the rear.
Premium double-stitched leather covers the seating surfaces and is also found on door inlays and around the steering wheel. Moreover, customers can upgrade to fine Nappa leather and gain a stitched instrument panel top and piano black decorative inlays. As tested, this model includes wood inlays and wood touches on the doors and dashboard, as well as around the lower center console.
The driver’s seat is power adjusted with available lumbar support, offering satisfactory back, hip and thigh support. A tilt and telescopic steering column adjusts according to your needs. The instrument panel features a four-analog layout punctuated by a digital driver’s information center. Notably, the center stack offers a sensible layout with an infotainment screen and climate and audio controls.
Between the front seats is the transmission shifter and the start/stop button. The main control knob for the infotainment system is also present, as are separate switches for audio, navigation and media.
The Audi Q5 offers very good interior storage with in-door pockets and bottle holders, an under dashboard storage net, seatback pockets and four cup holders. In the rear storage compartment are tie downs as well as a small, netted compartment large enough to hold a purse or camera bag. Furthermore, this model has 12-volt outlets, an auxiliary input port and cables to connect your smartphone.
The included Bang & Olufsen audio system provides exceptional clarity with the attendant speakers strategically placed throughout the cabin. Other available upgrades can bring in a black cloth headliner, a three-spoke multifunction steering wheel with paddle shifters, ventilated seats and rear side air bags.
The Audi Q5 model line is composed of five variations on the midsize luxury SUV theme. The three main models include a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 and a turbodiesel 3.0-liter V6 engine. Audi also markets hybrid and performance SQ5 editions separately, the latter with a supercharged V6 engine.
Performance for the base four-cylinder engine (2.0T) is measured at 229 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The gasoline V6 engine (3.0T) is rated 272 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. The turbodiesel V6 engine (TDI) has a rating of 240 horsepower and 428 pound-feet of torque. All three engines are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission with manual shifting capabilities.
As tested, the Audi Q5 TDI delivers good off the mark acceleration and superior power on the road, owing to its low 1,750 to 2,250 rpm torque curve. Its 0-to-60 mph time is in the middle of the model line pack, coming in at a robust 6.5 seconds. Its all-wheel drive system is standard across the model line and is always on. Undoubtedly, handling is a strong suit as the Q5 takes every curve of the road with precision and with virtually little body roll noted.
Audi offers many of technological amenities customers in this segment covet. Its Audi Connect infotainment system provides in-cabin Wi-Fi connectivity for as many as eight passenger devices. Users have access to Google Earth Mapping and to real-time data.
Access to the infotainment system is through a display located at the top of the center stack. It features a large screen with a black background and orange and white lettering. A control button located between the front seats and near the transmission shifter enables the driver to select music categories, switch to navigation or handle other commands while staying focused on the road ahead. Additional controls are located on the face of the steering wheel.
In crashworthiness testing conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2015 Audi Q5 scored “Good” in four areas: moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraints & seats. Good is the highest score awarded by the IIHS. The institute also recognized the Audi’s available front crash prevention system in helping to mitigate certain types of accidents.
Every Audi Q5 comes equipped with front, front thorax side air bags and side curtain air bags. Stability control, traction control, anti-lock brakes, electronic brake-force distribution, and brake assist are also standard. Upper trim level models offer an available $3,000 driver assistance package with dynamic steering, Audi drive select and adaptive cruise control.
Pricing for the 2015 Audi Q5 is from $39,300 for the Premium edition, $42,200 for the Premium Plus and $52,900 for the Prestige edition. Engine upgrades add $3,200 to $5,300, depending on the model.
A fully optioned Audi Q5 TDI with an S line appearance package, an adaptive suspension system and safety upgrades pushes the final price closer to $65,000. A well-equipped Prestige Plus model with the larger gasoline engine starts around $50,000.
The midsize luxury sport utility vehicle segment is well represented with every brand having at least one offering. If Audi design, engineering and quality are not enough to sway some shoppers, its full-time, all-wheel drive system may be the clincher. It provides a level of steering and handling sophistication that few competitors can contest, while the obtainable turbodiesel delivers superior performance and fuel efficiency.
