The 2014 Volkswagen Eos is one of those rides that help distinguish VW from the rest of the mainstream automakers. The Eos would stand out for its sophisticated performance and upscale style in any case, but it also adds an uncommon approach to open-air driving.
A small hardtop convertible, the 2014 Volkswagen Eos has two doors and four seats. It’s available in “Komfort,” Sport and Executive trim levels, each with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, a six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive.
Volkswagen’s Car-Net telematics system is newly standard for 2014. VW also dropped last year’s Lux model.
The 2014 Volkswagen Eos has a cab-forward look. Its power-retractable hardtop makes the passenger compartment look closer to the front of the car than the back. This gives the Eos a lunging appearance, as if it’s eager to hit the road. An open hardtop emphasizes the Eos’ smooth sheet metal.
VW provides standard features such as halogen headlights, halogen fog lamps, LED taillights, 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, heated windshield-washer nozzles and heated mirrors with integrated turn signals. Also, even with its convertible top, the Eos has a standard power sunroof. Options include adaptive bi-xenon high-intensity-discharge headlights, LED daytime running lights and 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels.
Upscale details in the 2014 Eos’ cabin include bridge-like struts that connect the dashboard to the floor console. The dash itself has a sporty, molded appearance that’s complemented by plenty of legroom for the front seats. The two smaller rear seats have fixed backs but also a center pass-through into the trunk. It partly makes up for small cargo capacity. The Eos offers 10.5 cubic feet of cargo space with its retractable hardtop in place and 6.6 cubic feet with the top dropped.
Base models are equipped with leatherette upholstery, heated front seats, a 12-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, an eight-way manually adjustable front-passenger seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, keyless entry and a leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel. VW also offers available features such as leather seating surfaces, a 12-way power-adjustable front-passenger seat and ebony wood-style trim.
The standard powertrain for all 2014 Volkswagen Eos models starts with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. It makes 200 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque, which are managed by a standard six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive also is standard.
The Eos is better at cruising than at carving corners with its standard suspension. However, the Sport and Executive models have a standard sport-tuned setup for improved driving dynamics.
You’ll see EPA ratings of 22/30 mpg city/highway in any case.
Standard technology for the 2014 Eos includes a navigation system, a 5-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, satellite radio and an auxiliary input jack. The Executive models upgrade with standard equipment such as an enhanced navigation system, a 6.5-inch touchscreen, HD Radio, an SD card reader, a 30 GB hard drive and a 10-speaker Dynaudio sound system with 600 watts of power.
