Overview

By Tim Esterdahl (Last Updated 12/11/2017)

In its last model year before a major refresh, the 2014 Toyota Camry remains a top choice in the midsize sedan segment.

The 2014 Toyota Camry has been a top choice for decades. It is a great used car as well with good fuel economy, ample room, great reliability and a relatively low price.

The 2014 Camry is offered in a L, LE, SE, SE Sport and XLE trims. The Camry is also available as a hybrid model. The base Camry comes standard with Bluetooth, a USB port and a touch-screen audio system with a 6.1-inch display.

Optional features include a sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, heated front seats, automatic headlights, proximity key with push-button start, navigation, satellite radio, HD Radio and a JBL audio system.

Exterior

While the Camry is known as one of the best-selling vehicles on the market, it doesn’t have a reputation for offering the most exciting exterior styling. This is especially the case in current automotive environment where many cars offering bold character lines and unique grilles.

The base Camry comes with 16-inch steel wheels with wheel covers, projector headlights, and folding sideview mirrors. Higher trims add exterior styling elements like chrome interts for the side rocker panels, 17- or 18-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, a rear spoiler and chrome exhaust tips.

Interior

The Camry’s interior generally offers ample room, good visibility and quality materials. Still, it does suffer from being overly plastic in lower trim levels.

With the placement of the knobs, controls and steering wheel, the Toyota Camry is one of the few cars that really fits most everyone. All of these items are within easy reach for different body sizes.

The 2014 Camry seats five, and the front and rear seats provide ample head- and legroom for all passengers.

Unlike some midsize sedans, you can really fit four adults into the car with possibly a fifth in the spacious rear seats. The trunk also offers a competitive 15.4 cubic feet of trunk space.

Performance

All 2014 Toyota Camry sedans are front-wheel drive. The base engine is a 2.4-liter four-cylinder that produces 178 horsepower, while a 3.5-liter V6 that makes 268 horsepower is optional. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard with both engines. The base Camry gets an EPA-estimated 25/35 mpg city/highway, while the V6 model gets 21/31 mpg.

Lastly, the 2014 Camry Hybrid has a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and an electric motor that combine to produce 200 horsepower combined.

A continuously variable transmission (CVT) is standard on the Camry Hybrid. The Camry Hybrid LE gets an EPA-estimated 43/39 mpg city/highway, while the XLE model achieves slightly lower estimates.

For this review, we drove the 2014.5 Toyota Camry Hybrid. The powertrain does a good job of propelling the sedan through the city and, while it requires a bit of extra time to speed up for highway on-ramps, the Camry Hybrid has just enough power for the highway. The ride is OK on all surfaces. It isn’t as smooth as a Lexus, but it’s perfectly acceptable for a midsize car.

Technology

Toyota provides an ample amount of technology throughout their Camry lineup with Bluetooth, a touch-screen audio system and a USB port as standard equipment on all models.

As you move up the trim levels, you get additional technology features including Toyota’s Entune infotainment system. This system does a great job of providing plenty of apps and functionality to the midsize sedan. Overall, the Toyota Camry provides all of the technology offerings of its rivals. Just make sure you pick the right package for your needs.

Safety

The 2014 Toyota Camry is available with driver assistance features that include a rearview camera (standard on the 2014.5 model), blind spot monitoring and Toyota’s Safety Connect telematics system.

The Camry received a top five-star score for overall crash protection from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Additionally, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the Camry its Top Safety Pick award.

Cost-Effectiveness

It’s hard to say anything negative about the 2014 Toyota Camry’s cost-effectiveness. For transporting up to five people and commuting, it is a top choice. This is especially the case for the Camry Hybrid.

The Hybrid starts under $30,000 and provides up to 43 mpg in the city and 39 on the highway. If you spend a lot of time driving in the city, the hybrid model undoubtedly makes a lot of sense.

The Camry is also a smart proposition for used car shoppers, thanks to Toyota’s track record of building reliable vehicles which last for years.

Overall

While a new 2015 model is out there, the 2014 Camry shouldn’t be overlooked. While it isn’t the most exciting looking sedan on the market, the 2014 Camry’s reliability and cost-effectiveness are tough to overlook. If you are in the market for a used Camry, this model is a good bet.
