Overview

By Aaron Turpen (Last Updated 12/11/2017)

Fully redesigned for 2014, the Rogue now sports a third row and more cargo volume.

For 2014, Nissan completely updated the Rogue crossover. They’ve added a third row, nearly 50 percent more cargo volume, 40/20/40 split for the second row, and more. It’s also very fuel efficient, ergonomic for everyday family use, and has a smart look that rivals many contemporaries. All around, the 2014 Nissan Rogue is a good compact crossover, though there are others that might be peppier, bigger, or prettier. Overall, the Rogue is a complete package that will fit with many people’s needs.

Interior & Exterior

The 2014 Nissan Rogue is one of the better looking crossovers in the segment. It boasts a sporty exterior with plenty of package options to upgrade the bling through the three trim levels. At the base level S, 17-inch steel wheels, LED running lights, power mirrors, and LED turn signals are standard.

The popular SV package adds 17-inch alloy wheels, rear privacy glass, and automatic headlights. A few touches of chrome are also apparent on this package. The top-level SL trim upgrades to 18-inch alloy wheels, foglights, heated mirrors, roof rails, and more chrome options. Most of the items in the next-up trim can be added as part of package options in the lower trims.

Inside the Rogue, the interior has been upgraded to include a Zero Gravity seating option for the driver and front passenger seat, adding a lot of comfort. Trim levels go through several technology and other upgrades as well, including the option for a third-row and the innovative Divide-N-Hide rear storage system. The only distraction for the Rogue is its ho-hum steering and handling, which are soft and somewhat boring compared to many rivals. Many drivers may not mind this and on a long highway ride, it’s a welcome cushion, but in town and everyday, it can be disappointing.

Performance

Only one powertrain is available in the 2014 Rogue, a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 170 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque. This runs into a continuously variable transmission (CVT) in either front-wheel or all-wheel drive. Both FWD and AWD bring 28 mpg combined by EPA estimates, making the Rogue one of the most fuel efficient crossovers in its segment.

Performance numbers are on par with the segment, but there are competitors with more speed and agility than the Rogue offers. If you prefer more muscle in your crossover, consider others with a V6 option, which the Rogue lacks.

Technology

Many great technology items are available in the Rogue. Nissan’s innovative AroundView monitor is chief among those when it comes to safety, adding a 360-degree view of the vehicle thanks to four strategically-positioned cameras.

This creates a split-screen view on the 7-inch display, showing what’s going on around the vehicle, with the infotainment screen showing the Rogue from a top-down view for the AroundView system sharing the screen with the backup camera view when in reverse. For parking, getting out of tight spots, or backing into a busy street, this system is one of the best you can find.

NissanConnect smartphone integration is also one of the best in the field, allowing a smart phone to run Pandora, Facebook and Twitter through the infotainment system. Other additions for safety include an optional lane-departure warning system, blind-spot warning, forward collision warning, a panoramic sunroof, and more.

Safety

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the 2014 Nissan Rogue four out of five stars for its overall performance in NHTSA crash tests. The 2014 Rogue also received a Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Cost-Effectiveness

Without all of the technology bundling, the 2014 Rogue is a good value for the used car buyer. Extra technology can add to the price quickly and may or may not translate into a more expensive used buy, but it certainly can add to the driving experience if you can get them without too much cost.

The previous-generation Rogue’s track record for used sales was about average, with prices being on par with averages in the compact crossover segment when being resold. This generation, because of its updated look and better packaging, may move ahead of the norm for resale.

Maintenance and other histories are important, but a well-maintained Rogue is not likely to have serious problems as it ages. The all-wheel drive Rogue should retain value slightly better than does the FWD version.

Overall

The 2014 Nissan Rogue has a lot to offer the compact crossover buyer. It’s well-sized, comes in nicely-outfitted trim levels, and is comfortable to drive. Its fuel-strong styling will also appeal over some rivals.
