The first thing you’ll notice about the 2014 Nissan Cube is its modern look. From its boxy exterior to the concentric circles on the ceiling, the Cube boasts a style that will command your attention. Its angular appearance also means there’s plenty of cargo space and headroom in the cabin.
The 2014 Nissan Cube is a subcompact car that looks like it would be a hatchback. Instead, Nissan provides a swing-out, door-style tailgate. Seating for five is standard. This year’s trim levels are the S and SL. Their standard powertrains include a four-cylinder engine, a six-speed manual transmission and front-wheel drive. A continuously variable transmission (CVT) is optional. The Kia Soul and Toyota xB are among the Cube’s top rivals.
To add a new splash of color, Nissan introduces a Caspian Sea exterior finish for 2014.
The 2014 Nissan Cube definitely lives up to its name in terms of its general shape. But Nissan throws you some curves with the oval window openings. The rear windows on the passenger side are especially distinctive. Thanks to blacked-out roof pillars, they seem like one single sheet of glass that wraps around the rear right-hand corner of the Cube.
The entry-level Cube comes with equipment such as reflector-style halogen headlights, power-adjustable mirrors and 15-inch covered steel wheels. The Cube is available with fog lights, 16-inch aluminum-alloy wheels and many Nissan accessories that include an aerodynamic body kit.
A split-level dashboard greets you when you open the Cube’s doors. The top level has an undulating, curvy look, and, at the bottom of the dash, the vehicle controls are arranged in a circle. They go around a small readout for the climate system, and the whole setup looks like a modernized rotary dial for a telephone. The Cube also comes with 60/40-split folding rear seats. You’ll find 11.4 cubic feet of cargo space behind those seats, and that can be increased to 58.1 cubic feet by folding both seats.
Standard features include cloth upholstery, manually adjustable front seats, air conditioning, power accessories, a tilt-adjustable steering column, cruise control and a leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel. In addition, the Cube is available with automatic climate control, push-button ignition and keyless entry.
The 2014 Nissan Cube’s standard 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine produces 122 horsepower and 127 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, and a CVT is optional. Both transmissions are matched with front-wheel drive. With its wide stance, the Cube offers respectable handling for the segment.
Its fuel economy ratings leave a bit more to be desired. The Cube checks in at 25/29 mpg city/highway with a manual transmission and 26/30 mpg city/highway with a CVT. That’s a bit low for the segment.
Standard technology includes Bluetooth for hands-free calling, iPod connectivity and a six-speaker sound system with a CD player. Nissan also supplies available technology such as a navigation system, a 5-inch touchscreen, a USB port, satellite radio and a Rockford Fosgate audio system with an 8-inch subwoofer.
