Overview

By Tim Esterdahl (Last Updated 12/11/2017)

While Nissan has decided to discontinue the coupe, the 2014 Altima sedan gets a big technology upgrade with NissanConnect Apps.

Nissan may take risks in other segments, yet it doesn’t take any chances with the 2014 Altima. It is a solid offering free of polarizing styling and obscure features.

For 2014, Nissan offers the Altima in seven trim levels: 2.5, 2.5 S, 3.5 S, 2.5 SV, 3.5 SV, 2.5 SL and 3.5 SL.

Exterior

The 2014 Nissan Altima is a midsize sedan styled for a large audience. With this goal in mind, it scores well for its design.

The base Altima comes with 16-inch steel wheels, while higher trims offer features like 16- or 17-inch alloy wheels, a spoiler, fog lights and a sunroof.

Interior

The 2014 Nissan Altima seats five and is available with features like a heated steering wheel, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, leather upholstery and heated front seats.

The materials, fit and finish, instruments and knob placement are ideal for the car-buying masses. While Nissan isn’t a leader when it comes to interior refinement, the Altima’s cabin is adequate for the segment and doesn’t push prospective buyers away.

In terms of comfort, the 2014 Nissan Altima stands out with its “Zero Gravity” front seats. These seats relieve key pressure points and are comfortable longer, which is especially nice for long road trips. The Altima may not stand out with outrageous styling cues, but it does stand out as a really nice, comfortable sedan.

Performance

Engine options for the 2014 Nissan Altima include a 2.5-liter four-cylinder and a 3.5-liter V6. The 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine generates 182 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque. The 3.5-liter V6 produces 270 horsepower and 251 pound-feet of torque.

A continuously variable transmission (CVT) and front-wheel drive are standard. This CVT learns from your driving habits and adapts to you. It also delivers excellent strong, seamless acceleration. EPA fuel economy estimates for the four-cylinder Altima are 27/38 mpg city/highway, while the V6 model gets 22/31 mpg.

In our driving, we found the 2014 Nissan Altima to have a smooth and comfortable ride. Our only knock is that the V6 model feels a bit underpowered in some situations, but it’s still perfectly adequate for the segment.

Technology

The 2014 Nissan Altima comes standard with push-button start, proximity key and Bluetooth. Available features include remote start, a USB port, satellite radio, a touch-screen audio system with smartphone app integration (Nissan Connect), navigation, a Bose audio system and dual-zone automatic climate control.

NissanConnect offers integration with Facebook, Pandora and a variety of maintenance apps. The apps are pretty straightforward to use, and the optional navigation system does an adequate job of directing you where to go with pleasant colors.

Between the speedometer and tachometer is an information screen which relays vehicle-specific information to the driver. All of these gauges and screens are easy to read and pleasant to look at.

Safety

Like most midsize sedans, the 2014 Nissan Altima comes with standard features like anti-lock brakes, stability and traction control, front side air bags and side curtain air bags. A rearview camera is standard on many trim levels. Optional safety features include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alerts and a lane-departure warning system.

The 2014 Nissan Altima earned five out of five stars for its overall performance in crash tests performed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The Altima was also named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Cost-Effectiveness

With a base price just shy of $23,000, the 2014 Nissan Altima provides a good value. This is due to the many great features, pleasant ride and good fuel economy in the base model.

In the top trim SL level, the base price grows to $32,000, which is still a good value for the amount of features you get. Plus, the interior of the SL rivals what you’ll find in many premium sedans.

Overall

While the Nissan lineup has some unique vehicles, they are not taking any risks with the Altima. It is a great choice for midsize sedan shoppers and should be a top used car option. The fact that it doesn’t have the same brand recognition other sedans have, shouldn’t discourage you from finding this gem.
