The 2014 Infiniti QX50 is a versatile compact luxury SUV that has a few things in common with a traditional sports car. It’s a small vehicle with a big engine and standard rear-wheel drive. That helps make the QX50 a great choice if you like enthusiastic driving. If you’re focused on driver assistance, there are a wide range of technologies available.
The QX50 has room for five people. It’s available as either a base model or in the Journey trim. Both are equipped with a V6 engine and a seven-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is optional for each trim. The Acura RDX and Mercedes-Benz GLK are among the QX50’s key rivals.
The QX50 gets renamed this year to fit into Infiniti’s new-for-2014 naming strategy. It was known as the Infiniti EX in past years.
The QX50 has a smooth, speedboat-style body capped off by a sleek cabin. The roofline arches dramatically back to flow into low, angled pillars. The result is a lot sportier and more streamlined than a typical SUV.
Infiniti supplies standard features such as automatic headlights, fog lights, LED brake lights, a roof-mounted rear spoiler, dual exhaust outlets, 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels and heated mirrors with drivers-side courtesy lighting. Available equipment includes high-intensity discharge headlights, adaptive front lighting, a power moonroof, reverse tilt-down mirrors and 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels.
Smooth curves and flowing surfaces provide an elegant environment in the QX50’s cabin. There are distinctive vertical lines carved into the dash in front of the passenger so that it looks like high-quality pleated material. The QX50 has standard 60/40-split folding rear seats with 18.6 cubic feet of rear cargo space.
Standard equipment includes leather-appointed seats, an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, a four-way power-adjustable front passenger seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, cruise control and a leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel with a tilt-and-telescoping column. Heated front seats are optional along with two-way power-adjustable lumbar support for the driver, an eight-way power-adjustable front passenger seat, maple accents, a power tilt-and-telescoping steering column and power unfolding rear seats
A 3.7-liter V6 is standard across the lineup for the QX50. This engine makes 325 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque. The standard powertrain also includes a seven-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive, while all-wheel drive is an option. High-performance shocks are standard as well so that you can enjoy crisp handling.
With the standard powertrain, the QX50 earns fuel economy ratings of 18/25 mpg city/highway.
The QX50 offers standard technology like a 7-inch vehicle information display and a six-speaker audio system with an AM/FM stereo, a CD player, a USB port and satellite radio. Optional features include a navigation system, an 8-inch display, Bluetooth and an 11-speaker Bose audio system that adds an in-dash DVD player.
The standard rearview camera can also be complemented by driver-assistance options such as Infiniti’s adaptive Intelligent Cruise control, automatic forward emergency braking, a blind-spot monitor, forward collision warning, lane departure alert, lane keeping assistance and a surround-view camera system.
