When Honda introduced a redesigned Honda Accord last year, there was just one big hole – no hybrid. For 2014, Honda has addressed this hole with not just one, but two hybrids making the great selling Accord even more appealing.

The Honda Accord is one of Honda’s best-selling products and for good reason. It offers performance and fuel economy while delivering a quiet, smooth ride. Honda has also stocked it with the latest technology and an impressive array of safety features.

While the 2014 Honda Accord exterior design will never be known as a “cutting edge,” it isn’t completely bland. With a smooth front hood sporting nice “character lines” that are carried through the sides, it has more style than the bland sedans of yesteryear.

Honda has also done well in incorporating the daytime running lights in a way that is subtle and stylish. Rounding the exterior is the rear which again has a great combination of subtle and stylish lines.

Overall, the exterior is consistently both stylish while not being polarizing. It is exactly what Honda buyers have historically wanted: a stylish, yet basic sedan.

The 2014 Honda Accord comes standard with a 2.4L, 4 cylinder engine mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. This powertrain puts out 185 HP and 181 lb-ft of torque. Many buyers will likely opt for Honda’s continuously variable transmission (CVT) – it is the automatic option.

Honda’s CVT transmission with the 4-cylinder engine is EPA rated at 27/36/30 mpg city/highway/combined in all trim lines except for the sport. The sport gets 26/34/29 mpg city/highway/combined.

Another engine option Honda offers is a 3.5L V-6 rated at 278 HP and 252 lb-ft of torque. This larger and quicker engine gets fairly impressive fuel economy thanks to Honda’s usage of direct injection. It is EPA rated at 21/32/26 mpg city/highway/combined.

All 2014 Honda Accord models are front-wheel-drive whether you get the sedan or the coupe.

Whether you opt for the 4-cylinder or the larger v-6, the power delivered is smooth and Honda’s CVT transmission is known for being one of the best such transmissions on the market. While it isn’t as “zippy” as say the Civic, the larger car quickly accelerates and provides a pleasant, if not outright fun, driving experience.

While past Honda Accords have been routinely criticized for not having much technology features in the lower trim levels, the 2014 Accord doesn’t have the same problem.

For the driver and passengers, the dash has a three-tier layout with easy to use buttons and easy to read electronic displays. Starting from the top is an 8-inch display with an assortment of “infotainment” features like audio, apps, weather and navigation (depending on trim level). All of the knobs and buttons are laid out to be easily in reach for both the passenger and driver.

One of the big areas where the 2014 Honda Accord stands out against the competition is safety. As one of the few IIHS Top Safety Pick+ vehicles, it achieved the top score of “good” for frontal, side and rear impact tests. It also scored well in the new and tougher small overlap frontal impact test.

In addition to its excellent crash test rating, every Accord comes standard with standard with Electronic Brake Distribution, Brake Assist, stability control and hill start assist. Plus, it has new technology and safety offerings like Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning and Adaptive Cruise Control.

One of the most fun, new safety additions is the LaneWatch Blind Spot Display. This system uses the i-MID 8” screen to show a wide view of the passenger side on the screen when you put on the turn signal.

With the standard 2014 Honda Accord LX starting at only $23,625 and providing many of the great technology and safety features, it is hard to see the Accord as anything but a good value. It is also easy on your wallet with its 30 mpg combined.

Insuring an Accord should be cheaper than other vehicles thanks to its IIHS safety rating and the standard safety features in each model.

Lastly, maintenance costs on a Honda Accord should be low since it is known as an extremely reliable vehicle.

For cost-effectiveness, the Accord is the perfect A-to-B vehicle with a low purchase price and reputation for reliability.

Honda has a lot riding on the Accord and the 2014 model doesn’t disappoint. While, it doesn’t have the softest ride in the segment, it does provide a smooth driving experience.

In the end, the 2014 Honda Accord is changing perceptions of what it used to be with its suite of technology features, impressive drive and quiet cabin. It isn’t just a great rental car, it is a good family car.
