The large and powerful 2014 Dodge Challenger is back with just a few minor equipment updates for this model year. While not much has changed, it remains a top choice if you want to lay down rubber and need enough room to transport the kids.

While the 2014 Dodge Challenger will never been known as a tight-handling track car, it will be known as a great north-to-south drag racer. Plus, its large size makes it one of the most practical sports cars on the market.

The 2014 Challenger is a five-seat coupe that comes in SXT, R/T, SRT8 392 and SRT8 core trims. The base Challenger comes with standard features that include proximity key with push-button start, a power-adjustable driver’s seat and automatic climate control.

Options and features available on higher trims include automatic headlights, rear parking sensors, Bluetooth, a USB port, leather upholstery, heated front seats, navigation, a touch-screen audio system and a sunroof.

The 2014 Dodge Challenger is a large muscle car with smooth lines around the front that flow to the rear. Its exterior styling pays homage to the original Challenger of the 1970s, and the base Challenger SXT has exterior features that include 18-inch wheels and a dual exhaust system with chrome tips. Available features include a sunroof, racing stripes, a rear spoiler, HID headlights and 20-inch wheels.

With seating for five and 16.2 cubic feet of trunk space, the 2014 Dodge Challenger offers more room than you’ll find in competing muscle cars.

With the exception of automatic climate control and proximity key, standard features in the 2014 Challenger are fairly sparse. However, a number of options, such as leather upholstery and heated front seats, add to its appeal.

Whether you see the 2014 Dodge Challenger as a throwback vehicle to the muscle car era or simply a competitor to the Chevrolet Camaro or Ford Mustang, one thing is for sure: It has plenty of power under the hood.

For 2014, the base Challenger comes with a five-speed automatic transmission and a 3.6-liter V6 engine that produces 305 horsepower. Challenger R/T models feature a 5.7-liter V8 engine that makes 376 horsepower when paired with a six-speed manual transmission, or 372 horsepower when mated to a five-speed automatic.

If you’re looking for even more power, the Challenger SRT8 has a 6.4-liter V6 engine that produces 470 horsepower. Like the Challenger R/T, a six-speed manual transmission is standard and a five-speed automatic is optional.

The 2014 Challenger offers some standard features you won’t find on the competition, such as keyless entry and ignition and automatic climate control. Available features include Bluetooth, a USB port, navigation and satellite radio.

A six-speaker sound system is standard in the 2014 Dodge Challenger. However, if you really want good sound, look for the Sound Group II package with seven Boston Acoustics speakers. If that isn’t enough, an 18-speaker Harman Kardon audio system is available.

The 2014 Dodge Challenger earned five out of five stars from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for its overall performance in crash tests. The Challenger is available with rear parking sensors as an optional upgrade, but a rearview camera is not available.

The base Challenger has a slightly higher starting price than competitors like the Chevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustang. However, the tables turn if you’re shopping for a V8-powered muscle car. The Challenger R/T’s starting price of $30,495 undercuts what you would pay for a Chevrolet Camaro SS ($33,355) and Ford Mustang GT ($31,210).

In comparison with competitors like the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro, the 2014 Dodge Challenger looks like a more practical choice. Granted, it’s not as nimble on a twisty road, but you’ll get more cargo space, a more comfortable interior and a few additional standard features. Additionally, the Challenger also offers a range of powerful engine choices that are on par with the competition. As a result, the 2014 Dodge Challenger represents the right balance of style, performance and comfort for a number of muscle car shoppers.

‘I bought Yahoo’s car because of the retro styling. It looks good, drives well, but there s few things I don’t like. The 305 hp engine does run, but the automatic transmission shifts hard. Something that is normal for these cars. The gas mileage isn’t that good. I get between 16 and 19 in the city. The passenger seat has to be reset every time someone gets in the back seat. Overall, it’s an okay car. Spend the money on the V-8. At least your poor gas mileage has some real horsepower behind it.’ — Steve E.
