When the 2012 Hyundai Veloster hit the market, the quirky little sedan was praised for its hatchback practicality and sporty good looks. The Veloster’s oversized driver’s side door and two smaller passenger-side doors are only part of the car’s unconventional look. But it’s the fuel economy and low price tag that allows the Veloster to undercut its competitors including the Mini Cooper and Scion tC.
The Veloster’s sleek body, flowing curves, hexagonal grille and scoop hood give this hatchback a young, urban look. The hidden third passenger door allows rear-seat passengers to easily climb in without navigating past a folded front seat. The compact hatchback seats five. It comes in three almost identical trim levels, with color choices the distinguishing factor.
The Veloster has an aggressive, quirky look. A short, snub-nosed design at the front features a unique slim grille and a U-shaped front intake. The small hood has two cutouts and leads into a sharply raked windshield, similar to that of a motorcycle. The rounded rear-end design, central exhaust outlet and cutouts that are next to the rear taillights underscore the Veloster’s urban look.
Front LED headlight accents, a dual-centered exhaust system, a rear spoiler, 17-inch alloy wheels, heated sideview mirrors and a rear windshield wiper are standard. Available features include 18-inch wheels, fog lights, a panoramic sunroof and automatic headlights.
Despite the Veloster’s affordable price tag, the hatchback boasts a comfortable mix of hard- and soft-touch materials and motorcycle-style design that make the interior as distinctive as the exterior. The instrument panel stack is reminiscent of motorcycle fuel tanks and the oversized air vents are akin to the shape of motorcycle tailpipes. Look at the console floor, and you’ll see a motorcycle saddle shape.
For a small vehicle with an unusual design, the Veloster has a relatively spacious cargo area. With the rear seats in place, the Veloster has 15.5 cubic feet of cargo space. Fold the seats down, and total cargo space opens up to 34.7 cubic feet.
Standard interior features include cloth upholstery, a six-way adjustable driver’s seat, air conditioning and power windows and door locks. A leather-wrapped steering wheel, alloy pedals and leatherette upholstery are available.
The Veloster comes with a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 138 horsepower and 123 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard. A dual-clutch six-speed automatic is available. Front-wheel drive is the only layout offered.
With a compact body and a modestly powered engine, fuel economy is a healthy 27/37 mpg city/highway.
For an affordable compact vehicle, the Veloster comes with a solid list of standard technology features. Remote keyless entry, two 12-volt outlets, a tire pressure monitoring system, electronic stability control, traction control, satellite radio, Pandora internet radio, a USB port, MP3 capability, an auxiliary audio input jack, Hyundai’s Blue Link telematics system, Bluetooth, a six-speaker audio system and a 7-inch touch screen are all standard. Available features include an 8-speaker audio system, navigation, a rearview camera, push-button start and a 115-volt outlet.
"Fun car with a bad transmission. It hesitates during acceleration to the point it is downright scary and it can't decide which gear to be in. "

"Great looking car with good mpg. Sporty & unique looking; turns heads in 26.2 Yellow. Leased it and just bought the lease out to keep it long term."
