Decent Price, But Their Attitude Could Be Better
I was a full-time caregiver for my mother, and needed a car this past March because the 17-year-old car I had would no longer pass inspection, so I had to get a new car fairly quickly. I had only had one other car in my life, so needless to say I'm not well-versed in buying cars. While doing some online research, I saw that John's Auto Sales had the best deal on a 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan, and were in the same city I live in, so I contacted them and explained my situation. They did bring the car to my house to view. However, the salesman was 45 minutes late to bring the car to view, even though they had an appointment time down. That should have been a clue. Overall, the attitude of the manager and owner didn't really make me feel that I was valued as a customer. While the salesmen and the owner's son were extremely polite and helpful, I felt on more than one occasion with the manager and owner that I was an inconvenience to them. For example, when I made my initial offer that Friday, the manager told me they'd think about it over the weekend and call me back the following Monday. He never called back. I was the one that had to call back several days later on Thursday, and this happened more than once during the whole process. When I finally got in touch with the manager nearly a week later, not only did he insist the owner wanted the full asking price of the car, but the owner John then got on the phone and actually said he had 3 other people that were interested in the car, but that I had been the first one, even though my research later showed the car had actually been reduced in price after not selling for 3 months. After going back and forth a couple of times that week, I wound up saving only $500 on the car, but they dropped about $250 in their processing charges and gave me a trade-in of $250 for my old car, which would no longer be driveable. I can't say for sure if that was a good deal, since I haven't had to buy a car in a very long time. While I will say they did do everything that I needed them to do, during the entire time they were not reliable about callbacks, and I had been told more than once how busy they were. When I finally got the car, my own mechanic told me that the 2 front tires were bald and would have to be replaced, so the car had to yet again go back to John's for the tires. When I spoke to the owner to ask when the car would be ready, he actually told me that in his 40 years in business, he never had to do any of what I asked for any other customer. That certainly did not make me feel good. Instead, it made me really feel that I'd been a nuisance to them. I used to work in a customer service setting, and never in my life had I ever been made to feel this way by a business, nor would I ever have been allowed to act that way with a customer. You're always supposed to make a customer feel that you value their business. Instead, the impression I got was basically, Well, if you don't buy it, someone else will. They never said that, but that's just how I felt. The only person from John's that I can say was really outstanding was the owner's son, Jimmy. He brought the car back and forth for me, and even took it to my mechanic to have its inspection sticker, and brought it back. He was extremely polite and helpful, and had they all been just like Jimmy, I would have given them 5 stars. So, while in the end I feel the price I paid was less than I found elsewhere, and that they managed to do everything I asked, it wasn't without the feeling that I had put them out. Considering I could not leave my mother at home, who actually passed away a week after getting the car, I would have appreciated being made to feel that they were happy to help me under the circumstances, which I admit were unusual, but a good business should make any customer feel that they are of value no matter what the situation. Had I had more time to shop around for a car I would likely have looked around some more, but I am ultimately happy with the car and was glad I was able to have them come to me, since I couldn't go to them, and am grateful that they were able to handle all the necessary transactions for me. It just would have been a bit better if I hadn't been made to feel like I'd bothered them. So, if you find John's Auto has the best price around for a car you're interested in, go for it. Just be aware that their attitude might not always be what it should be if your situation is unusual.More
