Misleading experience - Used car prices are supposedly fixed
I contacted Bill Black Chevrolet Cadillac via email about a vehicle that perfectly suited our needs, even though they were 1 hour & 40 minutes away. I got some additional information from Lexi, then she went home for the day and Bill P. became my point-of-contact. We emailed and then spoke on the phone; I asked if there was wiggle room in the price because it was a little above our budget, and he said he was confident there would be, going so far as to tell me how cars that are on the lot for 40-60 days get discounted more because they cost the dealership money, and cars that are there for a week get discounted less. He said, It will definitely be worth the drive. We drove there the next day, and they put us right into the vehicle for a test drive; on the drive, our salesman (James - he was GREAT: Polite, knowledgeable about the vehicle, courteous) asked if we thought the vehicle fit our needs, and we said yes, but we'd need to come down a little on the price. James said he was our source for all the info on the vehicle itself, and Fred would be the man with whom we'd talk numbers. Fred came in to James' office afterwards and showed us the numbers (asking price + applicable fees and taxes) and we said we liked the car, but would want to negotiate on the price. That is when we were told by Fred that PRICES ON USED CARS ARE FIXED! We were floored - how was that possible? We wouldn't have driven almost 2 hours if we hadn't been told there was some wiggle room, as it was a bit above our budget. Long story short, Fred offered to take off $1000 which would be a loss for them because there was a miscommunication; we asked why we were told there was, indeed, some wiggle room, and no one had a direct answer. We walked away, and I have since sent an email asking how this happened: I have received a sincere apology from Bill P., but no one has explained why Bill P. said there would be wiggle room and why James didn't say prices were fixed when we mentioned needing the price a little lower if, as Fred asserted, they've had non-negotiable pricing on used cars for 6-8 months. In fact, no one has replied to my question of whether used car prices truly are fixed (and, if so, why there is a create your deal button for every used vehicle online).
