Used Wagon Information

The term "wagon" (aka "station wagon") has become a bit blurred in today's automotive market. Until a decade or so ago, it was reserved specifically for vehicles with a specific design; namely cars with a hatchback meant as family-haulers with expanded cargo room. With the advent of crossovers, however, the traditional station wagon is far less common and the term "wagon" now often refers to any vehicle with a car-like build and a hatchback. It usually refers to a vehicle with five doors (four doors and a hatch) and no sport utility heritage (not a crossover-SUV).

This new definition in the common parlance means that there are many more wagons on the market today than there were just twenty years ago. Many automakers offer hatchback versions of their popular sedans as well as hatch-specific models with no sedan option. The Subaru Impreza Wagon and Outback are popular models, as is the Toyota Venza, the Mazda3 Hatch, the Dodge Magnum, and the Volkswagen Jetta Wagon. Other five doors that are not traditional wagons are the Kia Soul and the Mini Cooper Clubman.

The Subaru Impreza Wagon and Outback are the most-recognizable true station wagons on the American market. They are some of the best-sellers in the traditional segment, though many consider the Outback to now be a crossover rather than a traditional wagon after recent design changes caused its size and ground clearance to grow.

The Toyota Venza is a popular model with a size larger than the best-selling Camry sedan yet smaller in stature than the RAV4 crossover and smaller in size than the Highlander crossover. In most people's eyes, the Venza is a traditional station wagon.

The Mazda3 Five-door (hatch) is a compact five-door wagon and is an option for the best-selling Mazda globally. It is known for its sporty nature and unique looks.

The Dodge Magnum is a station wagon version of the Chrysler 300 and was sold in various world markets, though mostly in the United States and Canada, until it was discontinued in 2008. It was one of the few full-sized sport wagons on the market, with options that ranged from a lightly-powered V6 to a muscle car-like high-horsepower V8 Hemi. A performance model under Chrysler's factory tuner brand SRT was also offered briefly.

The Volkswagen Jetta Wagon is a station wagon five-door variant of the Jetta sedan. It is currently the best-selling clean diesel five-door in North America and sells as one of the more popular models in VW's lineup in the U.S.
