Porsche Porsche Automobil Holding, usually just called Porsche, is still owned by the Porsche families and although being a part of the VW Group is actually controlling owner of VWG. Porsche was founded in 1931 by Ferdinand Porsche. The company did not build any cars at the outset, instead designing and consulting on vehicle and engine design, including what would become the now famous Volkswagen Beetle.
After World War II, Ferdinand Porsche was arrested and held in prison for 20 months without trial. His son, Ferry, continued the company and decided to design a car for himself since none worth buying were to be had on the German market. That car became the 356, the first car with the Porsche name on it. The original Porsche manufacturing center, an old sawmill, is still a part of the Porsche complex and is known as the Porschestrasse.
Porsche cars of the 1940s to the 1970s are now considered collectible classics. This includes the 1964 launch of the very popular 911 and 912 models. The Porsche 911 continues to this day to be the most iconic of all Porsche motor cars.
On the used car market, the Porsche 911 and Cayenne are very common, as is the Boxster, Cayman and Panamera. The Macan crossover is beginning to be seen on used car lots now as well.
All Porsche vehicles, new or used, are marked for their luxurious fittings, sporty nature, and precise handling. Even the Macan crossover has a reputation for being sportscar-like in its handling characteristics.
