Used Hatchback Information
A hatchback is any vehicle with a rear hatch, usually defined as a door which opens upward to give a full opening for the back of the vehicle. Hatchbacks are often called "3-door" or "5-door" vehicles as well. Hatchbacks are common in many passenger vehicle styles, including compact cars, midsize wagons, crossovers, and minivans. For automotive market purposes, however, a hatchback usually refers only to compact, small and midsize cars which may be sold in a sedan version as well.
Hatchbacks are popular on the market for their added versatility, larger interior space, and relative low cost as an option over a sedan. Popular hatchbacks include the Mazda2 and Mazda3, the Toyota Prius, the Kia Spectra / Forte, the Chevrolet Sonic, and the Mini Cooper.
The Mazda2 and Mazda3 are the best-selling vehicles from Mazda globally, with the Mazda3 also being the best-seller for the brand in the United States. The 2 is a subcompact car while the 3 is a compact car and both are offered with a hatchback option, which is the most popular body style for both vehicles in North America. They are known for their sporty nature and better-than-average interiors.
The Toyota Prius is the world's best-selling hybrid vehicle and is now offered in three body styles, all of which are hatchbacks. The common Prius is now known as the "Liftback" while the subcompact Prius c and the midsized Prius v round out the lineup. Commonly considered the most fuel-efficient cars on the road, the Prius line has a solid reputation in secondary market sales and good trade-in retention.
The Kia Spectra was a car produced by the Korean automaker until 2009, when it was replaced by the Forte. Both are sold with hatchback options, though their sedan variants were more popular. Known for the high level of value for the purchase price, the Forte has gained a reputation for being over-and-above the competition in interior refinement for the sticker price.
The Chevrolet Sonic replaced the Chevrolet Aveo and has received much acclaim from the automotive press for its high value delivery in the contentious subcompact market and as Chevy's first foray into a seriously competitive offering in that segment.
The Mini Cooper is an iconic BMW brand that sells well in the United States as a compact car offering. The Mini is offered in both a three- and five-door model as well as a larger Countryman option. It is most well-known for its iconic style and fun paint options and sells well in the secondary (used) market.
