2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overview
The 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee is a five-passenger, midsize SUV offered in standard 4x2 and available 4x4 configurations. The 2012 model comes in Laredo, Limited, Overland and Overland Summit editions.
The 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee comes with three engine choices. Standard is a 3.6-liter V6 making 290 horsepower and paired with a five-speed automatic transmission. Also available is a 5.7-liter V8 engine making 360 horsepower, which is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. A special SRT8 model is marketed separately and it comes with a 475-horsepower, 6.4-liter V8 engine and a five-speed automatic transmission.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee outfitted with the V6 engine is EPA-rated at 17/23 mpg city/highway and takes regular gasoline. When equipped with the smaller of the two V8 engines, this model is rated 14/20 mpg city/highway. With the larger V8, this model is rated at 12/18 mpg city/highway and takes premium grade gasoline.
The Grand Cherokee Laredo comes equipped with door sill scuff plates, automatic headlamps, heated folding side mirrors, air conditioning, a six-speaker audio system, a single-speed transfer case for 4x4 models and aluminum painted wheels.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited brings in 18-inch wheels, Jeep logo door sill scuffs, a panoramic sunroof with a power shade, automatic headlamps with auto leveling, daytime running lights, a 115-volt power outlet, heated first- and second-row seats, a nine-speaker audio system and a two-speed transfer case.
Overland and Overland Summit editions come outfitted with leather seats, a premium navigation system, zoned climate control and a cargo net. Both editions come with a trailer tow group. An optional DVD entertainment center is available for all models except for the Laredo.
The Grand Cherokee's interior is roomy and seats five comfortably. Standard cargo capacity comes in at a generous 35.1 cubic feet, and is expandable to 68.7 cubic feet with the rear seat folded. This vehicle has a towing capacity of 5,000 pounds.
In crashworthiness testing conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee achieved the highest scores and was recognized with the IIHS's Top Safety Pick award. Every Grand Cherokee comes equipped with front active head restraints, hill start assist, and a suite of air bags. Also available is a rearview camera and rear park assist.
