Saturn Ion

Saturn Ion

While GM retired the Saturn brand, plenty of used Saturns are still for sale and represent bargains, especially the Saturn Ion. Last produced in 2007, it was priced as an entry-level vehicle for young drivers. It can be found as 4-door or as a "Quad Coupe" which is styled like a coupe but with a pair of rear passenger doors that open on a reverse hinge like many pickup truck supercab rear-entry doors.

MODEL OVERVIEW

The last Saturn Ion, the 2007 model, had few changes because General Motors knew they were planning on ending the production of Saturn vehicles. Like most cars, it's best to start your search for an Ion with the latest model years. This will ensure that you receive the most up-to-date safety and convenience features.

2003 marked the debut of the Saturn Ion. The 2003 and 2004 models feature sporty styling and come available as either a four-door sedan or a quad door coupe, which has a coupe shape with rear-hinged rear doors. The 2005 model adds standard ABS and traction control. 2006 provides some slight design tweaks. The 2007 Ion comes available in eight different colors. It also includes optional power windows, an optional power tilt/sliding sunroof, optional aluminum or chrome wheels, and optional rear spoiler.

The Ion, like other compact cars, gets good gas mileage. The 2007 models range between 20 to 23 city mpg and 28 to 31 hwy mpg.

SAFETY

In safety testing performed by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the 2007 Saturn Ion received an "Acceptable" mark for moderate front overlap in crash tests.

Some of the safety features on the Ion include driver air bags, passenger air bags, optional rear head air bags, passenger air bag on/off switch, and optional side head air bags.

NOTEWORTHY ABOUT THE SATURN ION

  • In 2006 General Motors won the Overall Manufacturer award for the seventh consecutive year and demonstrated an outstanding ability to retain its customers. GM also secured five additional awards including honors for its Chevrolet Impala, Corvette and Tahoe, and the Saturn Ion and Vue.
  • Saturn is known for making their exterior panels with ding-resistant polymer, great for avoiding dents in car doors.
  • Kelley Blue Book says that "though the Ion is not yet the equal of such vehicles as the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla, it is a worthy compact offering excellent fuel economy, an agreeable price tag and a number of innovative options."
