Nissan introduced the Xterra back in 2000 as a stylish midsize SUV that could handle off-roads with the same ease as the highway.

Three trim levels are available for the current 2014 Xterra: the base X, the S model, and the premium Pro-4X edition. Standard amenities featured on the base model of the Xterra include power door locks with autolock feature, keyless entry, and a tubular roof rack. Choose the Xterra-S for all of those features as well as black body moldings, alloy wheels, and more. Upgrade to the 4X and your vehicle will also include off-road shocks and hill descent control. The MSRP on the base X model starts at $23,110 with prices going up for the S and Pro-4X models.

The roof rack standard on the current model of the Xterra is perfect for fishermen, hikers, bikers, and everyone else in need of storage space. This roof rack is constructed of aluminum and is very durable, able to hold up to 150 pounds of gear. And thanks to the rear bumper steps, getting inside and outside of the Xterra couldn’t be any easier. Children and shorter individuals will appreciate this feature.

The four-door, five-seat Xterra offers your choice of seven exterior colors including Night Armor, Metallic Blue, and Cayenne Red. Gray the only interior color choice. Each person riding along with you will enjoy the smooth handling the Xterra offers. Even in off-road conditions, the Xterra makes for a comfortable and smooth ride time and time again. There is plenty of interior space as well as leg and head room. The engine is designed to allow you to tow a boat or small camper.

With so many trim levels and years of the Xterra available, there is a perfect choice for all drivers who need a reliable SUV that can handle rougher off road conditions. When in search of a used Xterra model, start your search with the 2009 edition if you want side curtain airbags as standard equipment. Many optional features can be added to the Xterra to enhance the driving experience. These include fog lights, step rails, roof rail crossbars, and tow packages.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the 2014 Xterra a "good" rating for moderate front overlap and side impact.

The Xterra includes a number of standard safety features including electronic stability control (ESC), ABS and driveline traction control, side impact beams, dual stage driver and passenger seat-mounted side airbags, and low tire pressure warning.

  • US News gave the current Xterra an overall score of 7.5 out of a possible combined 10 score for performance, customer satisfaction, interior, and safety.
