The original, non-hybrid Escape, introduced in 2000, was jointly developed with Mazda to offer consumers seeking an SUV with a car-like design. The second generation of Escapes were redesigned in 2009 to keep current with compact SUV designs of the time. Many of the updates—including larger headlamps, cleaner lines, and rounder wheel arches, and the sync system remained through the 2012 models and became standard on select models. The current, Third Generation includes the MyFord Touch information system, a hands-free liftgate that lets you open it with your foot, and a keyless entry system.
The 2014 Escape is available in both front-wheel and all-wheel drive as well as with an optional towing package that can haul up to 3,500 pounds (if powered by the V-6 engine). Standard features include the MyKey keyless entry system, as well as power windows, mirrors, and door locks, air-conditioning, 17-inch 5-spoke wheels, and six-speaker AM/FM single disc CD/MP3 player. In addition, Ford also offers more exterior color choices, an impressive list of options, and four trim packages that include SYNC hands-free command, heated leather front seats, ambient lighting, moonroof, and a rear camera.
A 2013 Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the 2013 Ford Escape earned the rating of "Good" in side impact, roof strength, and head restraints. With seven airbags, a rollover traction control, 4-wheel-disc anti-lock brakes, and electronic stability control, the Escape will appeal to safety-minded drivers.
The 2014 Escape includes the MyKey system with programmable safety feature as well as the Sync 911 Assist that pairs your smartphone to enable you to notify emergency services to your exact location in the event of a collision.
The 2013 Ford Escape was the recipient of numerous accolades, including being named the first-ever Popular Mechanics Car of the Year, and the 2013 Best Compact SUV for the Money by US News and World Report.
