The frontal crash test indicates how well the safety features and restraints will protect an occupant in a head-on collision. The side-impact test conveys the chance of a severe chest injury, while the rollover resistance rating estimates the risk of rolling over in a single vehicle crash. Go to NHTSA to learn more about these results.

Important: Frontal crash test ratings can be compared only among vehicles of similar weight.
The Saab 9-5 was re-engineered for the 2002 model year with structural changes to improve occupant protection in frontal crashes. All 2002 and later 9-5 models manufactured after November 2001 also include airbag modifications to further improve occupant protection (note: information about when a specific vehicle was manufactured is on the certification label typically affixed to the car on or near the driver door).

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has evaluated the crashworthiness of a 9-5 with the structural and airbag changes in a 40 mph frontal offset crash test into a deformable barrier.

The 9-5 was modestly restyled for the 2006 model year.
Dummy movement was well controlled. During rebound, the dummy's head hit the roof rail and B-pillar. Measures taken from the head, neck, chest, and left leg indicate low risk of injuries to these body regions in a crash of this severity. Forces on the right tibia and right knee indicate that injuries to the lower leg and knee would be possible. Head acceleration from the roof rail/ B-pillar hit was low. 2002 Saab 9-5 4-door 3602 front seat-mounted combination head and torso airbags 106 190 70 3.0 L turbocharged V6 18 26

The risk of significant injuries to other body regions is low. Measures taken from the dummy indicate a low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity. The dummy's head was hit by the pillar behind the rear passenger door and the window glass and window sill of the rear door. The pillar is required by federal standard to provide some protection for occupants' heads. The impacts with the window glass and sill did not produce high head injury measures, but the head protection is inadequate. 2004 Saab 9-5 Arc 4-door
The Saab 9-5 was introduced in the 1999 model year. Although engineering changes were made to improve frontal crashworthiness beginning with 2002 models built after November 2001, these changes were not expected to affect side-impact performance.

The 9-5 was modestly restyled for the 2006 model year.
The dummy's head was protected from being hit by any hard structures, including the intruding barrier, by a side airbag that deployed from the seat.
