<p>The Chevrolet Uplander, Pontiac Montana SV6, Buick Terraza, and Saturn RELAY were introduced in the 2005 model year as replacements for the Chevrolet Venture, Pontiac Montana and Trans Sport, and Oldsmobile Silhouette. (A limited number of Chevrolet Ventures and Pontiac Montanas were produced for the 2005 model year.) The Pontiac Montana SV6 was discontinued after the 2006 model year.</p>
Dummy movement was reasonably well controlled. However, the dummy's head bottomed out the airbag and hit the steering wheel. During rebound, the dummy's head hit the B-pillar and roof rail.
High head accelerations occurred when the dummy's head hit both the steering wheel through the airbag and the B-pillar, indicating that head injuries would be possible in a crash of this severity. Injury measures taken from the neck, chest, and both legs indicate low risk of injuries to these body regions.

<p>The Chevrolet Uplander, Pontiac Montana SV6, Buick Terraza, and Saturn RELAY were introduced in the 2005 model year as replacements for the Chevrolet Venture, Pontiac Montana, and Oldsmobile Silhouette. The Pontiac Montana SV6 was discontinued after the 2006 model year.</p>
<p>Beginning with 2006 models, the side airbags became optional for both the front and second row seating positions (front only in 2005). Also beginning with 2006 models manufactured after November 2005, the vehicle floor was reinforced to improve occupant protection in side impact crashes (note: information about when a specific vehicle was manufactured is on the certification label typically affixed to the car on or near the driver door). Further changes were made starting with 2006 models manufactured after February 2006 to strengthen the standard second row bucket seats for side impact crashes. (The optional captain's chairs were modified earlier.)</p>
<p>Two tests of the Uplander were conducted, one with optional side airbags for the driver and rear passenger, and one without. Both vehicles were manufactured after all design changes for 2006 had been made. These vehicles are rated separately, except that the structural ratings for both vehicles are based on both tests.</p>
<p>In both tests, there were problems with the seats occupied by the rear passenger dummies. During the first test, all four of the attachment points for the optional captain's chair (with side airbag) released, allowing the seat to become completely dislodged. In the second test with the standard bucket seat (and no side airbag), one attachment point released and a second one broke, allowing partial separation of the seat from the floor. While these seat separations did not appear to exacerbate any injury measures recorded by the rear dummies, such separations should not occur.</p>
The intruding barrier came close to the dummy's head in this test. Although the barrier did not hit the head, this near miss indicates that only slightly different crash circumstances could produce a direct hit to a person's head.

The Chevrolet Uplander is sold on the basis of its value. Fit, finish and build quality rank with the best in the class. Uplander is easily Chevrolet's best minivan yet. Its styling doesn't do much for us, and it falls short when it comes to ride and handling. However, the big 3.9-liter V6 delivers strong acceleration performance.J.P. The strength of the Chevy Uplander lies in its value. Comparably equipped, the Uplander sells for thousands less than class standards such as the Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna. Uplander comfortably seats seven, with a choice of individual captain's chairs or a two-place bench seat in the second row. And it takes care of its passengers in a well-designed, nicely finished interior. The base LS model offers a high level of standard equipment, including a subscription to GM's OnStar tele-aid service. StabiliTrak electronic stability control is now standard on all extended-length passenger models. A removable hard drive called Phatnoise is available that allows the onboard entertainment system to play or display everything from MP3 music files to family photos to video games to the latest movie releases. Uplander's main shortcoming has been a lack of performance, but Chevrolet addressed this last year by offering a new, 3.9-liter V6 with 240 horsepower. For 2007, the weak 3.5-liter V6 has been dropped from the model line and the more potent 3.9-liter is standard. With the optional towing package, Uplander is rated to pull up to 3,500 pounds. Chevrolet would be happy if you thought of Uplander less as a minivan and more as a blunt-nosed SUV crossover. Uplander's pouty snout was calculated to suggest this. Regardless, the Uplander is the best minivan Chevrolet has ever offered.
