Rollover Resistance
|
|
The National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration (NHTSA) provides 3
different ratings -
full-width frontal crash test
,
side impact crash test
, and
rollover resistance
. The frontal crash test indicates how
well the safety features and restraints
will protect an occupant in a head-on
collision. The side-impact test conveys
the chance of a severe chest injury,
while the rollover resistance rating
estimates the risk of rolling over in a
single vehicle crash.

The Nissan Altima was redesigned for the 2002 model year.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has evaluated the crashworthiness of the Altima in two 40 mph frontal offset crash tests into deformable barriers. In the first test, the airbag deployed late. This led Nissan to modify the airbag crash sensors on 2002 models produced after March 15, 2002 plus Nissan has initiated a service campaign to modify the sensors at its cost for the models produced earlier. The Institute tested a second Altima with the modified sensor, and the airbag inflated much earlier. Ratings of the Altima are based on the results of the second test, except structural performance is based on both tests.

Dummy movement was well controlled in the second test. The dummy rebounded into the seat without its head hitting any stiff structure that could cause injury. However, the driver's seat pitched forward slightly, tipped toward the door, and moved forward slightly on its inboard track, where the safety belt buckle is anchored.
In the second test, measures taken from the head, neck, chest, and right leg indicate low risk of injury to these body regions in a crash of this severity. Forces on the left tibia indicate that injuries to the lower leg would be possible.

Measures taken from the dummy indicate that serious skull fracture and/or brain injuries and neck injuries would be likely in a crash of this severity. A fracture of the pelvis also would be likely. Rib fractures and/or internal organ injuries plus a left femur fracture would be possible.
Measures taken from the dummy indicate that serious neck injuries would be possible in a crash of this severity. The risk of significant injuries to other body regions is low.
The dummy's head hit the window sill of the rear passenger door, producing moderately high neck injury measures. Hitting the window areas should be prevented.
2005 Nissan Altima 2.5 S 4-door

The Nissan Altima was redesigned for the 2002 model year. Beginning with 2005 models, door changes were made to improve occupant protection in side-impact crashes. (Nissan reported that these door changes would not significantly affect side-impact performance in models without side airbags; therefore, the overall side impact rating for 2002-05 models without side airbags is the same.)

When side airbags are optional, as in this vehicle, the Institute conducts the test without this option. If a manufacturer offering optional side airbags requests the Institute to conduct an additional test of a vehicle with this option and agrees to reimburse the cost of the vehicle, a second test is conducted. Nissan did not request such a test.

The dummy's head was hit by the intruding barrier, producing high head injury measures.

Description:
|
On certain vehicles, the rear subframe may have been manufactured incorrectly, which could result in a crack in a bracket which holds part of the rear suspension. If the bracket is cracked, the stability of the vehicle may be affected under severe driving conditions. This could lead to a loss of control of the vehicle which could result in a crash. Dealers will inspect the rear subframe to determine if it was manufactured incorrectly and replace it, if necessary. The recall is expected to begin on February 27, 2006. Owners may contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
|
|
Description:
|
Certain passenger vehicles equipped with 2.5 liter engines may experience excessive engine oil consumption as a result of improper performance of the piston rings. If the oil is not maintained at least at the minimum level, engine damage can occur and in extreme cases result in an engine fire. Dealers will reprogram the electronic control module (ECM or engine computer). Your vehicle will also be inspected to determine if it has been consuming engine oil at a higher than normal rate. In a small percentage of vehicles, engine replacement will be needed. On June 9, 2006, Nissan notified owners of the possibility of excessive oil consumption and the importance of maintaining the oil at a proper level. Follow-up letter to owners advising them of the status of the recall was sent during August 2006. Followup letter to owners was sent on November 15, 2006. Owners may contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261.

New Car Test Drive Review
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
Summary:
|
High performance, high practicality.
By Mitch McCullough, NewCarTestDrive.com
The Nissan Altima boasts strong performance and responsive handling. Yet it's also practical, roomier than most mid-sized sedans, with comfortable accommodations front and rear, and a big trunk. The 2006 models will be the last of the current-generation Altima. An all-new 2007 model is on the horizon.New Car Test Drive editor Mitch McCullough is based in Redondo Beach, California. |
|
Overview:
|
The Nissan Altima is a roomy, comfortable, practical mid-size sedan. But while the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry aim squarely at the mainstream buyer, the Altima boasts lots of power, sporty handling and expressive styling. It's designed to please fewer people, but to please those few more intensely. In this respect the Altima reminds us more of Mazda's mid-size sedan, the Mazda6. Both offer stand-out styling; both surrender some refinement for gains in handling response. In other ways, however, they are diametric opposites: The lean and wiry Mazda is the smallest car in this class, powered by a choice of high-winding engines; while the muscular Nissan tops the class in both horsepower and wheelbase and is one of the roomiest cars in the class. The Altima delivers stunning acceleration when ordered with its 250-horsepower V6, essentially the same engine used in the Nissan 350Z and Maxima. Punch it in any gear and it takes off, with nimble handling and brakes to match its thrust. The high-performance Altima SE-R adds 10 more horsepower and even more sports appeal. And for its part, the Altima's standard four-cylinder engine is more powerful than comparable engines in the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Mazda6 or Mitsubishi Galant. So no matter which model you buy, you get a more powerful car with the Altima. Altima also boasts a bigger interior than Camry and Accord. Altima's interior was redesigned for 2005, which resulted in an improved cabin. Altima also received some mild styling enhancements and a slight boost to its V6 for 2005. For 2006, Nissan has added four new option packages, and the optional satellite radio receiver is now factory-installed.
