<p>The Ford Escape and Mazda Mariner were introduced in the 2001 model year and structurally modified beginning with 2005 models to improve occupant protection in frontal crashes. The Mercury Mariner, introduced in the 2005 model year, also had the structural modifications. The Mazda Tribute will not be produced for the 2007 model year but will reappear for 2008.</p>
Dummy movement was well controlled. During rebound, the dummy's head hit the B-pillar and roof rail.
Measures taken from the head and chest indicate low risk of injuries to these body regions in a crash of this severity. Forces on the right tibia and both feet indicate that injuries to the lower leg would be likely and injuries to the feet would be possible. Forces on the neck indicate that injuries to the neck would be possible. Head acceleration from the B-pillar/roof rail hit was low.

Measures taken from the dummy indicate that rib fractures and/or internal organ injuries would be likely in a crash of this severity. Serious brain and neck injuries would also be possible. In addition, loading to the shoulder was excessive.
Measures taken from the dummies in the two tests of the 2003 model, taken together, indicate a low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity.
In both tests of the 2003 model, the dummy's head was hit by the pillar behind the rear passenger door. This pillar is required by federal standard to provide some protection for occupants' heads.
2003 Ford Escape XLT 4wd
<p>The Ford Escape and Mazda Tribute were introduced in the 2001 model year, and the Mercury Mariner was introduced in 2005. The Mazda Tribute will not be produced for the 2007 model year but will reappear for 2008.</p>
<p>Two tests of a 2003 Escape were conducted, one with an optional side airbag for the driver, and one without. A third test of an Escape, a 2005 model, was conducted because the side airbags were changed beginning with 2005 models to include protection for the rear passenger. These vehicles are rated separately, except that the injury and head protection ratings for the rear passenger are based on both tests of the 2003 models. Structural ratings for the three vehicles are based on all three tests.</p>
The dummy's head was hit by the intruding barrier, producing moderately high head injury measures.

Description:
|
On certain trucks, passenger cars and sport utility vehicles, the windshield wiper motor may have been produced without grease being applied to the output shaft gear. After a period of continuous use on the high speed setting, lack of grease on the output shaft gear may cause the gear to distort or fracture during operation resulting in a loss of wiper function. Inoperative wipers under inclement weather conditions could cause a crash due to impaired visibility. Dealers will inspect the wiper motor for the presence of grease and grease the wiper motor gears if necessary. The recall is expected to begin on November 21, 2005. Ford Escape is solid choice among compact sport utilities for on-road use. It has a roomy interior, comfortable and convenient with useful cargo capacity. The four-cylinder engine delivers plenty of power for most needs, even with the four-speed automatic. The available V6 engine delivers strong power. A four-wheel independent suspension and unit-body construction make it ride and handle almost as well as a car. The Ford Escape is America's best-selling compact sport-utility. And it's a good choice. The Escape offers comfortable seating for four and plenty of space for stuff. Folding down the rear seats reveals a moderately sized cargo area with a flat floor. Its smooth ride and agile handling make for enjoyable driving, and its compact dimensions make it easy to maneuver and park when you get there. Propulsion comes in several forms including a 200-horsepower V6. It's quick and enjoyable and communicates very well with the automatic. The Escape is also available with a gas/electric hybrid system. The Escape Hybrid is one of the cleanest, most fuel-efficient vehicles in its class (see separate review) and driving one is easy and enjoyable, very little different from a regular Escape. But the standard four-cylinder engine may be all you need. It was updated, beginning with 2005 models, and it offers decent power and works well with the automatic. Four-wheel drive is also available, offering good wintry weather capability. The Escape lineup has been broadened for 2006, but is otherwise unchanged. It was significantly revised for 2005, which brought a new face, a brightened interior, a new 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine and a revised suspension.
