<p>The Ford Escape and Mazda Mariner were introduced in the 2001 model year and structurally modified beginning with 2005 models to improve occupant protection in frontal crashes. The Mercury Mariner, introduced in the 2005 model year, also had the structural modifications. The Mazda Tribute will not be produced for the 2007 model year but will reappear for 2008.</p>
Dummy movement was well controlled. During rebound, the dummy's head hit the B-pillar and roof rail.
Measures taken from the head and chest indicate low risk of injuries to these body regions in a crash of this severity. Forces on the right tibia and both feet indicate that injuries to the lower leg would be likely and injuries to the feet would be possible. Forces on the neck indicate that injuries to the neck would be possible. Head acceleration from the B-pillar/roof rail hit was low.

2005 Ford Escape XLT 4wd
<p>The Ford Escape and Mazda Tribute were introduced in the 2001 model year, and the Mercury Mariner was introduced in 2005. The Mazda Tribute will not be produced for the 2007 model year but will reappear for 2008.</p>
<p> Two previous tests of the Escape were conducted, one with an optional side airbag for the driver, and one without. The optional side airbags were changed from combination front seat-mounted head and torso airbags to front and rear head curtain airbags for 2005 models built through August 2004. Beginning with 2005 and later Escape, Tribute, and Mariner models manufactured after August 2004, front seat-mounted torso airbags were added to the optional front and rear head curtains (note: information about when a specific vehicle was manufactured is on the certification label typically affixed to the car on or near the driver door). </p>
<p> Structural ratings for the vehicles are based on the two previous tests plus the latest test.</p>

Description:

Certain sport utility vehicles equipped without side air curtains or moonroofs fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 201, ""Occupant Protection in Interior Impact."" During testing, the free motion head form registered a measurement above the permitted limit at the left hand a-pillar trim area. In the event of a vehicle crash, personal injury to occupants may occur. Dealers will make modifications to the energy absorbing material located above the headliner in the affected area free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on May 30, 2006. Owners may contact Ford at 1-800-392-3673.

It's as if somebody decided something needed to be done and right now, so how do we go about it? For now, the solid Ford Escape with Mercury styling will have to do. Compact sport utility vehicles are popular because they are smaller and easier to park than midsize SUVs like the Ford Explorer. They're also lighter and have more fuel-efficient engines and, of course, they're less expensive. Yet they offer the utility of cargo space with fold-down back seats and that commanding view of the road that comes with a higher seating position. The new 2005 Mercury Mariner is based on the Ford Escape, hailed for its responsive handling, smooth road manners and available V6 engine. Mariner comes standard with front-wheel drive (2WD) and a four-cylinder engine. It's easily and affordably upgraded with all-wheel drive (4WD) for stable traction in the snow and a powerful V6 for more responsive performance. The 2005 Mercury Mariner boasts a slick and clean design, with avant-garde styling cues. Inside is a pleasant and calming cabin with room enough for the kind of stuff people who are moving up from the Sable or retreating from the more truck-like Mountaineer need to haul around. As part of a carefully scripted, and enormously expensive, re-birth and rejuvenation of the Mercury brand, the Mariner is intended to offer a step up in status over the Ford Escape. It's a nice package. The size and basics are right. Fuel economy is respectable, and it's affordable even when fully optioned.
