Important: Frontal crash test ratings can be compared only among vehicles of similar weight.
The Ford Escape and Mazda Mariner were introduced in the 2001 model year and structurally modified beginning with 2005 models to improve occupant protection in frontal crashes. The Mercury Mariner, introduced in the 2005 model year, also had the structural modifications. The Mazda Tribute will not be produced for the 2007 model year but will reappear for 2008.
Dummy movement was well controlled. During rebound, the dummy's head hit the B-pillar and roof rail. Measures taken from the head and chest indicate low risk of injuries to these body regions in a crash of this severity. Forces on the right tibia and both feet indicate that injuries to the lower leg would be likely and injuries to the feet would be possible. Forces on the neck indicate that injuries to the neck would be possible. Head acceleration from the B-pillar/roof rail hit was low. 2005 Ford Escape XLT 4wd 3580 none 103 175 70 3.0 L V6 18 22

Serious brain and neck injuries would also be possible. In addition, loading to the shoulder was excessive. Measures taken from the dummies in the two tests of the 2003 model, taken together, indicate a low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity. In both tests of the 2003 model, the dummy's head was hit by the pillar behind the rear passenger door. This pillar is required by federal standard to provide some protection for occupants' heads. 2003 Ford Escape XLT 4wd
The Ford Escape and Mazda Tribute were introduced in the 2001 model year, and the Mercury Mariner was introduced in 2005. The Mazda Tribute will not be produced for the 2007 model year but will reappear for 2008.

Two tests of a 2003 Escape were conducted, one with an optional side airbag for the driver, and one without. A third test of an Escape, a 2005 model, was conducted because the side airbags were changed beginning with 2005 models to include protection for the rear passenger. These vehicles are rated separately, except that the injury and head protection ratings for the rear passenger are based on both tests of the 2003 models. Structural ratings for the three vehicles are based on all three tests.
The dummy's head was hit by the intruding barrier, producing moderately high head injury measures.

New Car Test Drive Review

Category: Review:
Summary:

Among the sportiest of the compact SUVs.
By Tom Lankard, NewCarTestDrive.com

The Mazda Tribute is a joy to drive. When equipped with the V6, it offers more power than the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V and other small SUVs with four-cylinder engines, and it costs less than a similarly equipped Liberty.

New Car Test Drive correspondent Tom Lankard is based in Northern California.

Overview:

It's a well-worn cliche, but the Mazda Tribute puts some sport in sport utility. Responsive handling and brisk performance from the available V6 engine make the Tribute one of the sportiest of the compact SUVs.

The 2005 model line has been recast to complement the rest of the Mazda lineup. A new Tribute i model comes with a new four-cylinder engine that's available with a new five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic. The Tribute s features a powerful V6 and four-speed automatic. Both models are available with a new four-wheel-drive system that uses electronics in place of last year's hydraulic system to better split power between front and rear tires according to driving conditions.

The 2005 Mazda Tribute gets a more polished look, as well. A new front fascia and other styling revisions add zest to what was already one of the better looking contenders in the class. The suspension has been revised for improved handling. Available side-impact airbags and curtain airbags enhance safety.

Mazda Tribute delivers an excellent value for drivers who want the versatility of a sport utility, but with the superior refinement and on-road handling of a car-based utility can offer. Mazda and Ford worked jointly on developing the Mazda Tribute and Ford Escape and they share much in common, but the Mazda offers sportier handling.
