The side-impact test conveys the chance of a severe chest injury, while the rollover resistance rating estimates the risk of rolling over in a single vehicle crash. Important: Frontal crash test ratings can be compared only among vehicles of similar weight.
The Volvo S80 was introduced in the 1999 model year and modified beginning with 2000 models to include structural changes to improve occupant protection in frontal crashes. Beginning with 2001 models, the frontal airbags also were improved to include dual-stage inflators that permit low energy deployments in low severity crashes, sensors that reduce the likelihood of deployment in minor fender-benders, and vent holes positioned better to direct hot gasses away from a driver's hands.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has evaluated the crashworthiness of the Volvo S80, based primarily on performance of a 2000 model in a 40 mph frontal offset crash test into a deformable barrier. The performance of 2001 and later models is rated separately from 2000s because the airbag modifications are expected to reduce or eliminate problems in restraint system performance observed in the 2000 model. Otherwise, performance of 2000 and later models should be very similar.
Dummy movement was well controlled. After the dummy moved forward into the airbag, it rebounded into the seat and then its head hit the B-pillar. Measures taken from the head, neck, chest, and both legs indicate low risk of injury to these body regions. Head acceleration from the B-pillar hit was low. 2000 Volvo S80 4-door 3576 front and rear head curtain airbags and front seat-mounted torso airbags 110 190 72 2.9 L 6-cylinder 18 26

Description: On certain passenger vehicles, the front control arms may not have been manufactured correctly and, as a result, the stud and nut that secure the arm to the spindle may lose their initial axial tension. Under certain driving conditions, the steering may become less responsive and the driver may experience steering wheel play. This driving condition could eventually lead to separation between the front control arm and the spindle, which could result in a crash. Dealers will install a new type of nut. New Car Test Drive Review

Category: Review:
Summary:

Whisper quiet cabin and a sophisticated new suspension option.
By Sam Moses and Larry Edsall, NewCarTestDrive.com

The Volvo S80 offers excellent safety engineering, a smooth ride, a quiet cabin, and roomy, luxurious accommodations. Volvo designed the S80 to compete against the Audi A6, Lexus ES 300 and GS 300, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, BMW 5 Series and Acura RL. That's tough opposition. But the S80 has its near-silent ride, unique look and personality, Volvo's renowned engineering designed to protect its passengers. Now, with its new steering gear and optional Four-C suspension, the S80 also offers outstanding dynamics.

Overview:

Volvo has updated and upgraded its flagship S80 for 2004 with more than 700 changes. Many of those changes are parts and pieces that are hidden from the eye, but many were made to enhance the car's outward appearance and the environment within its passenger compartment.

The styling and interior of the Volvo S80 have been revised for 2004. The cabin is quieter and handling has been improved. Order the optional Four-C suspension and the S80 offers a smoother ride over bumpy pavement with less lean in corners.

Smooth and quiet, the big Volvo S80 offers luxury, roominess, and refinement. Its safety engineering is world class. Out on the road, it's as stable as the Rock of Gibraltar and its highly evolved, turbocharged six-cylinder engines deliver smooth, strong power.
