The National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration (NHTSA) provides 3
different ratings -
full-width frontal crash test
,
side impact crash test
, and
rollover resistance
. The frontal crash test indicates how
well the safety features and restraints
will protect an occupant in a head-on
collision. The side-impact test conveys
the chance of a severe chest injury,
while the rollover resistance rating
estimates the risk of rolling over in a
single vehicle crash.

The Toyota Camry was redesigned for the 2002 model year.

Dummy movement was well controlled. During rebound, the dummy's head hit the B-pillar and roof rail.
Measures taken from the head, neck, chest, and left leg indicate low risk of injuries to these body regions in a crash of this severity. Forces on the right tibia indicate that injuries to the lower leg would be possible. Head accelerations from the B-pillar and roof rail hits were low.

Measures taken from the dummy indicate that a fracture of the pelvis would be possible in a crash of this severity. The risk of significant injuries to other body regions is low.
Measures taken from the dummy indicate a low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity.
The dummy's head was protected from being hit by any hard structures, including the intruding barrier, by a side curtain airbag that deployed from the roof.

The Toyota Camry was redesigned for the 2002 model year. Beginning with 2004 models, side structural changes were made to improve occupant protection in side-impact crashes in cars equipped with optional side airbags.

Two tests of the Camry were conducted, one with optional side airbags for the driver and rear passenger, and one without. These vehicles are rated separately, except that the structural ratings for both vehicles are based on both tests.

AIR BAGS:SIDE/WINDOW
Description:
On certain vehicles equipped with a curtain shield air bag (CSA), during manufacturing, the CSA may have been twisted near the inflator due to improper assembly of the curtain shield air bag. If the CSA is twisted, the gas generated by the inflator may be inadequate for proper inflation of the air bag. In the event of the crash, incomplete air bag deployment could result increasing the risk of injury or death. Dealers will inspect the drivers and passengers side curtain shield air bags and replace the air bag assembly if necessary. The recall began on August 6, 2004. Owners should contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.

SEAT BELTS:FRONT:BUCKLE ASSEMBLY
Description:
On certain passenger vehicles equipped with a front passenger power seat, when installing certain rear-facing infant child seat bases onto the seat with an excessively high seatbelt tension, it may be possible to unseat a component called the buckle status switch from the seat belt buckle. If the switch becomes unseated, the front passenger occupant classification system may mistake the rear-facing child restraint for an unbelted adult occupant, and may not suppress the deployment of the front passenger airbag. Dealers will replace the front passenger seatbelt buckle status switch. This safety improvement campaign (SSC 40M) began on December 20, 2004. Owners should contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.

New Car Test Drive Review
Summary:
Stylish coupe and convertible join the popular sedan.
By Mitch McCullough and John Rettie, NewCarTestDrive.com
The Toyota Camry is the ultimate transportation appliance. It's a safe buy, a good vehicle to recommend to your friends. It pleases many buyers by offending none. It is in many ways an unremarkable car. What's remarkable about it is its lack of identifiable flaws. It does not have the personality of, say, a Nissan Altima, but it's much more refined. It will transport its occupants from A to B and back without any drama, nor any worries about reliability, year in and year out. It's comfortable, smooth and quiet. Its controls are very easy to operate. You never have to try to figure out how to work something. The Solara adds some style to the equation. It offers all the benefits of the Camry sedan and has a genuinely useful back seat and a good-sized trunk. The convertible offers the freedom of being able to drop the top. |
Overview:
The Toyota Camry continues to be the best-selling passenger car in America, with more than 413,000 sold in 2003. Toyota's reputation for quality, durability and reliability are a big part of the reason. The Camry is the perfect transportation appliance, flawlessly performing its duties, never annoying its owner. Its soft suspension smoothes out beat-up city streets. The interior is ergonomically excellent, with big climate and audio knobs that are easy to adjust. The seats are comfortable. What's not to like? How about the sporty look of a two-door? How about being able to drop the top? Enter the Toyota Camry Solara. The two-door Solara coupe gives its owner a sportier lifestyle, eliminating the stodginess of driving a four-door sedan. Yet it still offers the practicality of a truly useful rear seat. The Solara convertible puts the wind in your hair and brings a ray of sunshine into your life. At the same time, the Solara coupe and convertible are built on the same platform as the Camry sedan, and offer all the same quality, durability and reliability, while maintaining much of the practicality. Both offer easy, carefree operation. Both give their owners a sportier lifestyle without the cost and impracticality of a true sports car. Both are high-quality cars. If you want two doors, this is a safe, smart choice. The Camry sedan was completely redesigned, and greatly improved, for 2002, and the Solara models have been completely redesigned and greatly improved for 2004. The Solara convertible was unveiled at the 2004 Chicago Auto Show in February. And don't think the Camry sedan has been ignored for 2004. Sporty SE models offer a new 3.3-liter V6 rated at 225 horsepower. The new V6 comes standard on the Solara convertible and is optional on the Solara coupe. (Camry LE and XLE are available with the older 3.0-liter V6.) All V6 models come standard with a new five-speed automatic transmission. Choose a Camry sedan, a Solara coupe or convertible, and you'll have a smooth, quiet car that will give you years of reliable service and will never annoy you.
