The National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration (NHTSA) provides 3
different ratings -
full-width frontal crash test
,
side impact crash test
, and
rollover resistance
. The frontal crash test indicates how
well the safety features and restraints
will protect an occupant in a head-on
collision. The side-impact test conveys
the chance of a severe chest injury,
while the rollover resistance rating
estimates the risk of rolling over in a
single vehicle crash.

TRAILER HITCHES
Description:
Certain sport utility vehicles may have been equipped with dealer-installed trailer hitch wiring harness and control module. The electronic control module can overheat. Overheating of the trailer hitch wiring harness module could result in a fire. Owners are being requested to stop using the harness until a newly designed replacement is provided and can be installed by the dealer. Owner notification began May 28, 2004. Owners should contact Mitsubishi at 1-888-648-7820.

SEATS
Description:
On certain vehicles, the foot of the drivers side seat riser may develop a crack, resulting in reduced strength of the seat anchorage. In the event of a crash, the seat could become detached, increasing the risk of occupant injury. Dealers will inspect the drivers seat bracket to determine whether it requires replacement. If so, the dealer will replace it with a new, improved part. Owner notification is expected to begin during July 2004. Owners should contact Mitsubishi at 1-888-648-7820.

POWER TRAIN:DRIVELINE:DIFFERENTIAL UNIT
Description:
On certain sport utility vehicles, the retaining bolts that attach the propeller shaft to the center bearing flange and/or the rear differential flange may be missing, not sufficiently tightened or overtightened. If the retaining bolts were to fall out, the drive to the rear wheels may be interrupted. In the worst case, the driver shaft may fall down, increasing the potential for a vehicle crash. Dealers will inspect and replace with new bolts. Owner notification is expected to begin during August 2004. Owners should call Mitsubishi at 1-800-222-0037.

PARKING BRAKE
Description:
On certain sport utility vehicles, the parking brake pedal cable lock nut may not have been tightened to the proper torque specification. The lock nut may loosen and come off, which will reduce the effectiveness of the parking brake. This condition could allow the vehicle to roll if the transmission is not placed into the 'park' position and the vehicle is parked on a slope, thus raising the possibility of a crash. Dealers will inspect and tighten the parking brake cable lock nut, if necessary. The recall is expected to begin on April 1, 2005. Owners may contact Mitsubishi at 1-800-222-5500.

New Car Test Drive Review
Summary:
Mitsubishi hits the major leagues with all-new mid-size crossover SUV.
By Sam Moses, NewCarTestDrive.com
The Mitsubishi Endeavor, entirely designed and built in the U.S., is a solid new entrant into the mid-sized, mid-priced SUV field. Mechanically it appears to be on par with other mid-priced SUVs, while its styling is distinctive. |
Overview:
"Above all else: presence." The words come straight from Mitsubishi's press materials for the introduction of its new mid-sized SUV, called Endeavor. And the words are true to the effort. For sure, Endeavor gets an E for effort, for being designed and built by the North American team in the U.S. It's the fourth SUV offered by Mitsubishi, joining the entry-level Outlander, the rugged truck-based Montero Sport, and the more luxurious and highly capable Montero. But Endeavor's intended slot between Montero Sport and Montero is thin and tricky. Mitsubishi doesn't dare say the Montero is now facing redundancy, just that Endeavor's overriding goal has been to produce "a vehicle that meets the needs of the U.S. market head on, without the repackaging of a Japanese domestic market product for U.S. tastes." In other words, it may be that Mitsubishi Motors North America created the Endeavor partly to show Mitsubishi Motors Tokyo that it can build, above all else, an SUV with presence.
