Important: Frontal crash test ratings can be compared only among vehicles of similar weight.
The Lexus LS was redesigned for the 2001 model year and renamed the LS 430 because the engine size was increased.

All 2001-06 LS 430 models manufactured after December 2000 include a design change to prevent damage to the wiring harness connecting crash sensors involved in safety belt crash tensioner activation and airbag deployment (note: information about when a specific vehicle was manufactured is on the certification label typically affixed to the car on or near the driver door).

The LS 430 was evaluated in two 40 mph frontal offset crash tests. One car was manufactured before the wiring harness change; the other after the change, following discussions with Lexus. Due to the similarity of results, this evaluation covers both tests.
Dummy movement was well controlled in both tests. During rebound in the first test, the dummy moved toward the driver door, and its head hit the B-pillar. During rebound in the second test, the dummy's head hit the roof rail. In both tests, measures taken from the dummy indicate a low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity. Head accelerations from the B-pillar hit in the first test and the roof rail hit in the second test were low. 2001 Lexus LS 430 4-door 4065 front and rear head curtain airbags and front seat-mounted torso airbags 115 197 72 4.3 L V8 18 25

NHTSA Safety Recalls:
Important: The following recalls were issued for the 2004 LEXUS LS 430 by the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA). To find out if a specific 2004 LEXUS LS 430 still has open recalls that require repair, CARFAX recommends contacting an authorized dealership for more information.

Recall date: Not reported
Units potentially affected: 14,259
NHTSA campaign number: 04V295000
Defective part or component: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP
Description: On certain passenger vehicles, the impeller inside the fuel pump may have been improperly molded due to a manufacturing error. Alcohol in some fuels may deform the impeller and cause it to come into contact with the pump housing. This condition could increase the rotational resistance of the impeller and, in the worst case, may result in failure of the fuel pump. Dealers will replace the fuel pump. Owners will be notified in July 2004. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact Lexus at 1-800-255-3987.
Recall date: Not reported
Units potentially affected: 13,000
NHTSA campaign number: 04V317000
Defective part or component: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
Description: on certain vehicles when the accelerator is operated quickly, a small piece of metal may separate from a retaining collar located in the inner part of the automatic transmission. This small piece of metal may become caught in the parking lock mechanism. This may cause the parking lock system to be inoperative when the transmission shift lever is placed in the park position, thereby increasing the risk of vehicle roll-away, which could result in a crash. Dealers will replace the transmission. Owner notification is expected to begin during July 2004. Owners should contact Lexus at 1-800-255-3987.
Recall date: Not reported
Units potentially affected: 133
NHTSA campaign number: 06V096000
Defective part or component: AIR BAGS
Description: On certain vehicles, due to improper assembly of the air bag inflator, which is used in the side air bag, the curtain shield air bag, and the knee air bag assembly, some inflators were produced with an insufficient amount of the heating agents necessary for proper air bag deployment. In this condition, the expansion force of the gas may be insufficient to properly inflate the air bag when the srs system is activated during a crash. This may increase the risk of injury to the occupant in the involved seating position in the event of a crash. Dealers will replace the specific srs air bag. The recall is expected to begin during April 2006. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-888-270-9371, Scion at 1-866-548-1851, or Lexus at 1-800-255-3987.

New Car Test Drive Review

Category: Review:
Summary:

Liquid smooth and whisper quiet, quicker and more sophisticated.
By Mitch McCullough, NewCarTestDrive.com

The Lexus LS 430 excels as a luxury sedan with a cabin that''s quiet, comfortable, and luxurious. It is a meticulously crafted car that offers every luxury amenity imaginable, plus a few we would not have imagined. Its construction quality is the best in the industry. Everything about its operation is smooth. Its powerful V8 and six-speed automatic are a smooth, silent team. Its ride is silky, its steering is smooth and precise, its brakes allow easy modulation for smooth stops. If you want a premium luxury sedan that delivers no-hassle smooth, luxurious sailing, the Lexus LS 430 should be at the top of the list.

Overview:

The Lexus LS 430 benefits from substantial engineering upgrades for 2004 that significantly improve what was already a superb luxury car. It''s quicker and more sophisticated than last year''s model.

The LS 430 is everything a flagship luxury sedan should be. Its ride is silky and its steering is liquid smooth. Its soft suspension and slow steering lead some to believe that the LS 430 doesn''t handle well when compared with such European benchmarks as the BMW 7 Series or Mercedes-Benz S-Class, but we haven''t found that to be the case. The LS 430 can, in fact, be driven hard, whereupon it reveals lots of grip and very good handling. It boasts a powerful V8 engine, a new six-speed automatic, rear-wheel drive, and the latest in active safety technology.

Inside is a beautiful interior with rich wood accents and buttery soft leather, seats so comfortable that you never think about them, and controls that are a paragon of ergonomic excellence. Lexus provides every convenience feature imaginable. Finding failings in this car devolves into whining about bland styling or nitpicking about the lack of inconsequential features such as being able to grind the starter when the engine is running. In other words, the Lexus LS 430 plays its role to near perfection. That role is of a smooth, luxurious sedan that whisks occupants along in supreme comfort, allowing the driver to concentrate on other, more pressing matters than the automobile.

Toyota launched its Lexus luxury channel in fall 1989 with the introduction of the 1990 LS 400, an event that changed the rules for luxury car ownership. The third-generation Lexus LS appeared for 2001.

Model year 2004 brings major changes to the LS 430: revised styling, suspension refinements, safety improvements, and mind-boggling technology. A new six-speed automatic replaces last year''s five-speed for improved acceleration performance without sacrificing fuel economy. There are more airbags than ever before (eight) and a system that tightens the seat belts before a crash. There''s a tire-pressure monitor, a backup camera, headlights that swivel for seeing around corners, and Dynamic Laser Cruise Control that maintains a set following distance to the car ahead. With Bluetooth technology and SmartAccess, you can unlock the doors, start the car, drive off, and make hands-free phone calls without even pulling your key or your cell phone out of your pocket or purse.

Quality, durability and reliability are Lexus hallmarks. For the seventh consecutive year, the LS 430 ranked highest among luxury cars in the J.D. Power and Associates 2003 Initial Quality Study, a survey of owners after 90 days of ownership. And for the ninth consecutive year, J.D. Power''s vehicle dependability study named the LS 430 the most problem-free car after three years of ownership.

Clearly, the Lexus LS 430 is a luxury vehicle that owners do not need to worry about. They can simply enjoy its comfortable ambiance as it whisks them to their destinations.
