The National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration (NHTSA) provides 3
different ratings -
full-width frontal crash test
,
side impact crash test
, and
rollover resistance
. The frontal crash test indicates how
well the safety features and restraints
will protect an occupant in a head-on
collision. The side-impact test conveys
the chance of a severe chest injury,
while the rollover resistance rating
estimates the risk of rolling over in a
single vehicle crash.

Dummy movement was well controlled. During rebound, the dummy's head hit the roof rail and grab handle.
Measures taken from the dummy indicate a low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity. Head acceleration from the roof rail/grab handle hit was low.

Measures taken from the dummies in the two tests, taken together, indicate that rib fractures would be possible in a crash of this severity. The risk of significant injuries to other body regions is low.
Measures taken from the dummy indicate that rib fractures would be possible in a crash of this severity. The risk of significant injuries to other body regions is low.
In both tests, the dummy's head was protected from being hit by any hard structures, including the intruding barrier, by a side curtain airbag that deployed from the roof.
2004 Lexus ES 330 4-door

The Lexus ES 300 was redesigned for the 2002 model year and renamed the ES 330 for the 2004 model year because the engine size was increased. All ES 330 models manufactured after April 2004 include modifications to the rear door trim panels to improve rear seat occupant protection in side-impact crashes (note: information about when a specific vehicle was manufactured is on the certification label typically affixed to the car on or near the driver door).

Two tests of the ES 330 were conducted. The injury ratings for the rear passenger are based on just the second test; measures for the rear passenger in the first test were not obtained because of equipment failure. The injury ratings for the driver and the head protection ratings for both the driver and passenger are based on both tests. Structural ratings also are based on both tests.

SEAT BELTS:FRONT:BUCKLE ASSEMBLY
|
|
Description:
|
On certain passenger vehicles equipped with a front passenger power seat, when installing certain rear-facing infant child seat bases onto the seat with an excessively high seatbelt tension, it may be possible to unseat a component called the buckle status switch from the seat belt buckle. If the switch becomes unseated, the front passenger occupant classification system may mistake the rear-facing child restraint for an unbelted adult occupant, and may not suppress the deployment of the front passenger airbag. Dealers will replace the front passenger seatbelt buckle status switch. This safety improvement campaign (SSC 40M) began on December 20, 2004. Owners should contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.

New Car Test Drive Review

|
Summary:
|
Smooth-riding luxury sedan gets safer and more powerful.
By Mitch McCullough, NewCarTestDrive.com
The 2004 Lexus ES 330 represents an improvement over last year's model, mostly in terms of quicker acceleration performance. The ES 330 delivers a smooth, refined ride. Its engine and transmission are smooth and its brakes are smooth. The cabin is very quiet. Lexus quality and attention to detail pervade. If you want a smooth and quiet mid-size luxury sedan, you cannot do much better in this price range than the Lexus ES 330. |
|
Overview:
|
The Lexus ES 330 is the smoothest, quietest car in its class. Smooth and quiet are good because it can be a rough, noisy world out there at times. This quietude can be shared with others. The ES 330 is a four-door mid-size luxury sedan that seats five. Last year's ES 300 becomes the ES 330 for 2004 due to the introduction of a larger and more powerful 3.3-liter V6 engine. The 2004 Lexus ES 330 can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph nearly a full second quicker than last year's model, which is a significant improvement that can be felt by the driver. More important, the ES 330 is more responsive when driving around town. The five-speed automatic transmission has been revised for 2004 for smoother shifting and improved response. Our overriding impression of the engine and transmission, however, is their smoothness. The Lexus ES 330 is so smooth that at times it feels seamless in operation. The 2004 model year brings a host of other advancements that improve on this luxurious mid-size sedan. Among them: new and improved airbags, an upgraded passenger seat, and an enhanced navigation system. The ES 330 delivers a compelling combination of quality, comfort, refinement, and value. Lexus has a reputation for exceptional quality and behind the high-quality fit and finish is a great deal of careful design and detail work. Living with this car is easy. It's loaded with features that make life more convenient. The lighting package, for example, is extensive, so when you shut off the car and open the doors the interior and perimeter of the car are illuminated so it's easy to see when you're getting out at night.
