The National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration (NHTSA) provides 3
different ratings -
full-width frontal crash test
,
side impact crash test
, and
rollover resistance
. The frontal crash test indicates how
well the safety features and restraints
will protect an occupant in a head-on
collision. The side-impact test conveys
the chance of a severe chest injury,
while the rollover resistance rating
estimates the risk of rolling over in a
single vehicle crash.

The Kia Sedona was introduced in the 2002 model year. Kia says it changed the frontal airbag system for 2002-05 models built after March 2002 (see details below). A redesigned Sedona was introduced as a 2006 model.

Dummy movement wasn't well controlled. There was too much upward steering wheel movement. During rebound, the dummy's head moved partway out the open side window and hit the B-pillar. Also, in a separate 5 mph frontal impact without dummies in the car, both frontal airbags deployed. Such deployments not only are unnecessary in low-speed crashes but also may cause injuries to front-seat occupants positioned too close to the airbags. Note: Kia says it changed the airbag system for 2002 and later models built after March 2002 so that the airbags will no longer deploy in such a low-speed impact. Therefore, the restraints/dummy kinematics rating improves to MARGINAL for the later models.
Measures taken from the neck, chest, and both legs indicate low risk of injury to these body regions. However, a high head acceleration occurred when the dummy's head hit the B-pillar, indicating the possibility of head injury.

WHEELS
Description:
On certain minivans equipped with alloy wheels, moisture can accumulate around the rear hub caps causing damage to the outer wheel bearing. Wheel bearing failure may occur without warning which could result in a crash. Dealers will replace the rear hub caps. Upon inspection, some vehicles will also require replacement of the rear outer bearings and/or hub assembly. The recall is expected to begin on June 6, 2005. Owners may contact Kia at 1-800-333-4542.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:CABLES
Description:
On certain minivans, freezing conditions can cause water on the throttle cable to freeze during normal operation. Resistance to movement of the throttle cable can occur when the driver lifts their foot off of the gas pedal. This can cause the cable to stick, thus preventing the engine from returning to idle and causing the vehicle to maintain speed or accelerate. Such an event can occur without warning and could cause a crash. Dealers will modify a protective sleeve around the throttle cable. The recall is expected to begin during September 2005. Owners may contact Kia at 1-800-333-4542.

SEATS
Description:
On certain passenger vehicles equipped with power seats, the wiring under the front seats could be misrouted, allowing contact with metal seat components. This contact could eventually result in a short circuit condition that may result in a fire in the junction box area of the vehicle. Dealers will inspect and re-route the wires under the power seats, if necessary, as well as install protective seaming welts around those wires to better insulate them. The recall began on November 28, 2005. Owners may contact Kia at 1-800-333-4542.

New Car Test Drive Review
Summary:
A great value, now with DVD entertainment.
By Mitch McCullough, NewCarTestDrive.com
The Kia Sedona offers an outstanding value when compared with other minivans. As for quality, only time will tell. In the meantime, the Sedona guarantees much lower monthly payments, a responsive V6, an impressive list of features, and one of the best warranties in the business. Now it has DVD entertainment and 10 cup holders. |
Overview:
Kia Sedona offers a good value for big families that don't want to break the budget on a minivan. The Sedona is bigger than a Dodge Caravan and comes loaded with popular features, yet it costs about $4,500 less than other comparably equipped minivans. Though relatively inexpensive, the Sedona is among the few minivans that have earned the Federal government's top five-star crash rating for both driver and front-seat passenger in a front impact, and for all front and rear-seat occupants in side-impact tests, an important consideration in a family vehicle. Sedona drives well, too, with a responsive V6 engine and a five-speed automatic transmission. Its ride and handling are easy and smooth. The main difference is in the quality of the door handles and some of the interior finishes, and that's not much of a trade-off for $4,500. For 2004, the Sedona offers an optional DVD entertainment system at both LX and EX trim levels.
