The National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration (NHTSA) provides 3
different ratings -
full-width frontal crash test
,
side impact crash test
, and
rollover resistance
. The frontal crash test indicates how
well the safety features and restraints
will protect an occupant in a head-on
collision. The side-impact test conveys
the chance of a severe chest injury,
while the rollover resistance rating
estimates the risk of rolling over in a
single vehicle crash.

The Chevrolet Malibu was redesigned for the 2004 model year. The earlier design remained in production through the 2005 model year, but was called the Chevrolet Classic and was sold only to fleets.

Dummy movement was well controlled. During rebound, the dummy moved back into the seat without its head coming close to any stiff structure that could cause injury.
Measures taken from the neck, chest, and left leg indicate low risk of injuries to these body regions in a crash of this severity. A high head acceleration occurred when the dummy's head hit the steering wheel through the airbag, indicating that head injuries would be possible. Forces on the right foot were high, indicating that injuries to the foot would be possible.

Measures taken from the dummy indicate that serious skull fracture and/or brain injuries plus rib fractures and/or internal organ injuries would be likely in a crash of this severity. A fracture of the pelvis also would be possible.
Measures taken from the dummy indicate that serious head injuries would be possible in a crash of this severity. The risk of significant injuries to other body regions is low.
The dummy's head was hit by the window sill and window frame of the rear passenger door, producing moderately high head injury measures. Hitting the window areas should be prevented.

The Chevrolet Malibu was redesigned for the 2004 model year. The earlier design remained in production through the 2005 model year, but was called the Chevrolet Classic and was sold only to fleets.

All 2004-06 Malibu models manufactured after February 2004 include front door trim panel changes to improve occupant protection in side-impact crashes. (Chevrolet reported that these door trim panel changes would not significantly affect side-impact performance in models without side airbags; therefore the overall side impact rating for all 2004 and later models without side airbags is the same.)

Two tests of a 2004 Malibu were conducted, one with an optional side airbag for the driver and rear passenger, and one without. A third test of a Malibu, a 2005 model, was conducted because the side airbags were changed beginning with 2005 models. These three Malibus are rated separately, except that the structural ratings for the three vehicles are based on all three tests.

Beginning with 2007 models, side curtain airbags designed to protect drivers' and front and rear passengers' heads became standard, but side airbags designed to protect drivers' and front passengers' torsos remained optional.

The dummy's head was hit by the intruding barrier, producing high head injury measures.

SEAT BELTS:FRONT:ANCHORAGE
|
|
Description:
|
on certain passenger vehicles, analysis of an NCAP side impact test indicated the outboard anchorage of the driver's seat belt could disconnect because of contact between the seat trim and the anchorage connector when the seat was adjusted to its lowest position. If this occurred in a crash, the driver could receive greater injuries. Dealers will insert a retainer on both the driver and passenger's belt anchorages. Owner notification is expected to begin during June 2004. Owners should contact Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438.

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK:CONTROL UNIT/MODULE
|
|
Description:
|
Some of these passenger vehicles have an electronic control unit (ECU) that may calculate a higher than actual vehicle speed because of an erratic rear-wheel speed sensor signal, and cause ABS activation where it is not needed or needed abs activation to be extended during braking as the vehicle speed drops to about 3 mph. Unexpected ABS activiation could increase stopping distance up to about 11 feet depending on the grade of the road, increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will reprogram the ABS controller. Owner notification is expected to begin during May 2004. Owners should contact Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438.

New Car Test Drive Review
|
|

|
|
|
Summary:
|
An American sedan to take on Japan.
By Michelle Krebs, NewCarTestDrive.com
The 2004 Chevrolet Malibu has a rock-solid driving personality, a promising safety outlook, and lots of features at an attractive price. And we expect the Malibu to continue its strong quality track record. The Chevy Malibu is the second volley in GM's all-out assault on the Japanese carmakers' stronghold on midsize car sales leadership. (The first was the introduction of the redesigned 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix last spring.) GM has announced plans to revamp its entire midsize car line by introducing more than two dozen sedans, coupes, crossovers and convertibles over the next three years. |
|
Overview:
|
Chevrolet has completely redesigned its highly successful Malibu for the 2004 model year. The only thing that carries over from the old Malibu is the name. Every screw, nut and bolt is new on the 2004 Malibu. Test drives of several variations of the 2004 Malibu demonstrated that Chevy's new sedan stacks up well against the Japanese competition in driving dynamics and price. The driving performance of the Malibu exceeded our expectations. Steering and handling are softer than the Honda Accord, but firmer than the Toyota Camry, the right balance for a wide range of buyers. The solid body structure and supple suspension result in a quiet cabin and comfortable ride yet allow spirited driving. We were impressed with the power of the available V6. The cabin offers roomy accommodations for five passengers with comfortable seats and logical controls that are easy to use. Where the Malibu needs work is in the appearance department. On the outside, the new Malibu is not a raving beauty but it is better looking than the previous model, which sold well despite its plain appearance. The interior is a mix attractive, quality trim used in some areas and cheap plastic in others. If history is any indication, the new Malibu should offer good quality construction, however. The previous Malibu ranked tops in the midsize car class two consecutive years in the J. D. Power Initial Quality Surveys. Starting at just under $19,000 and topping out at about $25,000, Malibu prices are extremely competitive with prices of the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry, which can easily top $25,000.
