<p>The Toyota Corolla was redesigned for the 2003 model year.</p> <p>The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has evaluated the crashworthiness of the Corolla in two 40 mph frontal offset crash tests into deformable barriers. In the first test, forces on the right tibia were high enough to indicate the possibility of lower leg injury. This led Toyota to modify a portion of the padding underneath the carpeting on models produced after December, 2002. (Note: information about when a specific vehicle was manufactured is on the certification label typically affixed to the car on or near the driver door.) The Institute tested a second Corolla that had been retrofitted with the improved padding, and forces on the lower right leg were reduced so that significant injury was unlikely.</p>
Dummy movement was well controlled in both tests. After the dummy moved forward into the airbag in the first test, it rebounded into the seat without its head hitting any stiff structure that could cause injury.
Measures taken from the head, neck, chest, and left leg indicate low risk of injuries to these body regions in the first test in a crash of this severity. Forces on the right tibia indicate that injuries to the lower leg would be possible.

<p>The Toyota Corolla was redesigned for the 2003 model year. Side curtain airbags designed to protect front and rear occupants’ heads became optional beginning with 2005 models, in addition to the optional side airbags designed to protect drivers’ and front passengers’ torsos available since 2003.</p> <p>Two tests of a Corolla were conducted, one with optional side airbags for the driver and rear passenger, and one without. These vehicles are rated separately, except that the structural ratings for both vehicles are based on both tests.</p>

Description:
|
On passenger vehicles with Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN) starting with 1NX only and built from January 8 through February 13, 2002, it is possible for the bolts that join the rear brake and hub assembly to the rear axle carrier to be loose due to insufficient tightening during the assembly process. If the vehicle is operated in this condition, one or more of the four bolts could come loose, causing an abnormal noise from the rear axle area. In the event that all four bolts loosen completely, separation of the rear brake and hub assembly from the rear axle carrier could occur, which could lead to a loss of vehicle control. Dealers will properly tighten the bolts. Owner notification began March 21, 2002. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.

The Corolla is the car to consider if you're looking for a sophisticated and utterly reliable sub-compact sedan that blends in so well it's almost non-existent. It's not too much of a stretch to say the Corolla is a baby Lexus, it certainly has the same DNA. If you want something with the same mechanical components but with some pizzazz you're in luck as the Toyota Matrix, which is built off the same platform and has the same engine, offers more excitement and utility. Some may complain that Toyota has been conservative with its new Corolla but what it has cleverly done is create two very different cars - the Corolla for the conservative buyer and the Matrix for the young-at-heart person who wants Toyota reliability with a look that stands out in the crowd. You have your choice - the Corolla or the Matrix. |

Toyota says the Corolla has been the world's best-selling car when measured over the past 35 years. Apparently, that wasn't good enough. Toyota engineers and executives have not felt the old Corolla was the best sub-compact car in terms of image or value. What's more the company is concerned that the average age of Corolla buyers in the US is 44 years while buyers of the Honda Civic are an average five years younger than that. Rather than try to design one new Corolla that would appeal to older and younger buyers, Toyota has introduced two new cars radically different from each other in looks. Yet both are essentially identical under the skin. For younger buyers the Toyota Matrix (see separate nctd.com review) is a stylish five-door hatchback/wagon type vehicle that stands out in the crowded roads. For the rest of us, this new ninth-generation Corolla is an evolutionary model that carries on Toyota's tradition of producing a robust small car that acts as a great introductory model to the Toyota family. It's totally appropriate to describe this new Corolla as a baby Camry, which, in turn, is in a baby Lexus. That's not a bad pedigree for any car.
