The National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration (NHTSA) provides 3
different ratings -
full-width frontal crash test
,
side impact crash test
, and
rollover resistance
. The frontal crash test indicates how
well the safety features and restraints
will protect an occupant in a head-on
collision. The side-impact test conveys
the chance of a severe chest injury,
while the rollover resistance rating
estimates the risk of rolling over in a
single vehicle crash.

ENGINE COOLING SYSTEM:PUMP:WATER
Description:
On certain sport utility and passenger vehicles equipped with 4-cylinder engines, the water pump pulley center hole was improperly machined. In some instances, the interference fit between the inner wall of the pulley center hole and the water pump drive shaft was not as tight as specified in the drawing specification. This could result in the water pump pulley dislodging from the water pump shaft, which can cause severe engine damage/seizure during vehicle usage. Dealers will replace the water pump. Owner notification began September 12, 2002. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact Subaru at 1-800-782-2783.

New Car Test Drive Review
Summary:
Back to the Future in a Subaru.
By John Rettie, NewCarTestDrive.com
The 2003 Subaru Baja wears two hats. If you normally carry passengers but have occasional need to carry cargo such as mountain bikes, surfboards or awkward goods such as a refrigerator, then the Baja could be the ideal vehicle. That assumes you don't mind something that looks different from the run of the mill car or truck. |
Overview:
Remember the Subaru Brat? If so, you are probably over 30 years old. It was a unique vehicle, some would say funky. It was a small two-passenger sedan with a pickup bed on the back that contained two crude seats facing toward the rear. Now it has been re-incarnated in a thoroughly modern form as the 2003 Subaru Baja. This time, however, it is a much more civilized and practical vehicle with seating for four people as well as a modest pickup bed. It is currently the only car-based four-door crew cab pickup on the market. Plus its offers all-wheel drive. Subaru likes to call the Baja a Leatherman on wheels. And Subaru prefers that we forget the Brat.
