Rollover Resistance

The National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration (NHTSA) provides 3
different ratings -
full-width frontal crash test
,
side impact crash test
, and
rollover resistance
. The frontal crash test indicates how
well the safety features and restraints
will protect an occupant in a head-on
collision. The side-impact test conveys
the chance of a severe chest injury,
while the rollover resistance rating
estimates the risk of rolling over in a
single vehicle crash.

Measures taken from the dummy indicate that rib fractures and/or internal organ injuries would be likely in a crash of this severity. Serious brain and neck injuries would also be possible. In addition, loading to the shoulder was excessive.
Measures taken from the dummies in the two tests of the 2003 model, taken together, indicate a low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity.
In both tests of the 2003 model, the dummy's head was hit by the pillar behind the rear passenger door. This pillar is required by federal standard to provide some protection for occupants' heads.
2003 Ford Escape XLT 4wd

The Ford Escape and Mazda Tribute were introduced in the 2001 model year, and the Mercury Mariner was introduced in 2005. The Mazda Tribute will not be produced for the 2007 model year but will reappear for 2008.

Two tests of a 2003 Escape were conducted, one with an optional side airbag for the driver, and one without. A third test of an Escape, a 2005 model, was conducted because the side airbags were changed beginning with 2005 models to include protection for the rear passenger. These vehicles are rated separately, except that the injury and head protection ratings for the rear passenger are based on both tests of the 2003 models. Structural ratings for the three vehicles are based on all three tests.

The dummy's head was hit by the intruding barrier, producing moderately high head injury measures.

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK:CONTROL UNIT/MODULE
|
|
Description:
|
On certain sport utility vehicles equipped with antilock brakes (ABS), the ABS module connector may have missing or dislodged wire seals. This condition could allow contamination to enter the module connector, creating a potential for an electrical short. An electrical short might cause an ABS malfunction that would illuminate the ABS warning light, and in some cases, the module may overheat resulting in burning odor, smoke, and/or fire. This condition could occur either when the vehicle ignition switch is in the off position or while the vehicle is being operated. Dealers will inspect the wire harness connector to the ABS module for missing or dislodged wire seals, and repair or replace the harness connector as appropriate. The dealer will also inspect the connector on the ABS module and replace it if it is found to be corroded or damaged. The recall is expected to begin on or about April 30, 2007. Owners may contact Mazda at 1-800-222-5500.

New Car Test Drive Review
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
Summary:
|
Room and zoom at affordable prices.
By Mitch McCullough, Editor-in-Chief, NewCarTestDrive.com
Mazda Tribute offers more power than the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V and other small SUVs with four-cylinder engines. On the road, it is more sophisticated than the Nissan Xterra, Isuzu Rodeo, Mitsubishi Montero Sport, or Suzuki Vitara. And it costs less than a similarly equipped Xterra. Tribute is a joy to drive and is at the top of its class. |
|
Overview:
|
It's a well-worn cliche, but the Mazda Tribute really puts some sport in sport-utility. Responsive handling and brisk V6 performance make Tribute one of best of the small SUVs sold today. Mazda and Ford worked jointly on developing the Mazda Tribute and Ford Escape, and together they outclass the other small utilities, at least on dry pavement. Mazda Tribute delivers an excellent value for people who want the image and versatility of a sport-utility, coupled with refinement and better on-road handling than truck-based utilities can offer. Tribute ES, the top model, comes loaded with leather seating, a six-disc in-dash CD player and other luxury features. Upgrades for the 2003 Tribute ES include dash trim designed to look like carbon fiber, side-impact airbags that come standard, and available heated seats and mirrors.
