Important: Frontal crash test ratings can be compared only among vehicles of similar weight.
The Lexus LS was redesigned for the 2001 model year and renamed the LS 430 because the engine size was increased.

All 2001-06 LS 430 models manufactured after December 2000 include a design change to prevent damage to the wiring harness connecting crash sensors involved in safety belt crash tensioner activation and airbag deployment (note: information about when a specific vehicle was manufactured is on the certification label typically affixed to the car on or near the driver door).

The LS 430 was evaluated in two 40 mph frontal offset crash tests. One car was manufactured before the wiring harness change; the other after the change, following discussions with Lexus. Due to the similarity of results, this evaluation covers both tests.
Dummy movement was well controlled in both tests. During rebound in the first test, the dummy moved toward the driver door, and its head hit the B-pillar. During rebound in the second test, the dummy's head hit the roof rail. In both tests, measures taken from the dummy indicate a low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity. Head accelerations from the B-pillar hit in the first test and the roof rail hit in the second test were low. 2001 Lexus LS 430 4-door 4065 front and rear head curtain airbags and front seat-mounted torso airbags 115 197 72 4.3 L V8 18 25

New Car Test Drive Review

Category: Review:
Summary:

Still the benchmark for quiet luxury.
By Bob Plunkett, NewCarTestDrive.com

Lexus LS 430 dazzles with sophisticated styling and high-tech hardware, but its best attributes may be the quietness and cushy refinement of its luxurious passenger cabin.

Overview:

At once a deluxe limousine and high-performance touring car, the Lexus LS 430 delivers quick acceleration and agile handling along with features designed to take the work out of driving.

Consumers and experts alike have hailed the LS 430 as a benchmark for high-tech luxury in a meticulously crafted sedan. The flagship Lexus offers every luxury amenity we could want, plus a few we would never have imagined. It presents a very real example of everything technology makes possible, with systems that out-think and out-perform lesser cars and, in some cases, lesser drivers. Its functional aerodynamics and exacting quality control lead the rest of the world industry.

The third-generation Lexus LS appeared for the 2001 model year, and sailed unchanged through 2002. Changes for 2003 are minor. Fashionably larger 17-inch wheels are now standard.
