The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) provides 3 different ratings - full-width frontal crash test , side impact crash test , and rollover resistance . The frontal crash test indicates how well the safety features and restraints will protect an occupant in a head-on collision. The side-impact test conveys the chance of a severe chest injury, while the rollover resistance rating estimates the risk of rolling over in a single vehicle crash. Injury Measures
Head/Neck M
Chest G
Leg/foot, left A
Leg/foot, right G
Restraints/dummy kinematics A
Important: Frontal crash test ratings can be compared only among vehicles of similar weight.
The Jeep Liberty was introduced in the 2002 model year as a replacement for the Jeep Cherokee.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has evaluated the crashworthiness of the Liberty in two 40 mph frontal offset crash tests into deformable barriers. In the first test, the airbag deployed late because an airbag sensor wire shorted out early in the crash. This led DaimlerChrysler to develop a fix for this problem by shielding the wiring, and the manufacturer has initiated a recall. The Institute tested a second Liberty with the fix and the airbag inflated much earlier. Ratings of the Liberty are based on the results of the second test, except structural performance is based on both tests.
Dummy movement was reasonably well controlled in the second test. The dummy's head leaned out the open side window during rebound, then it hit the window frame. In the second test, measures taken from the chest indicate low risk of injuries to this body region in a crash of this severity. Forces on the head and neck indicate that injuries to the head and neck would be possible. Forces on the left tibia indicate that injuries to the lower leg would be possible. Head acceleration from the window frame hit was negligible. 2002 Jeep Liberty Sport 4wd 4100 none 104 174 72 3.7 L V6 16 20

NHTSA Safety Recalls:
Important: The following recalls were issued for the 2003 JEEP LIBERTY RENEGADE by the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA). To find out if a specific 2003 JEEP LIBERTY RENEGADE still has open recalls that require repair, CARFAX recommends contacting an authorized dealership for more information.

Recall date: Not reported
Units potentially affected: 336,000
NHTSA campaign number: 03V460000
Defective part or component: SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM:LOWER BALL JOINT
Description: On certain sport utility vehicles, the constant tension lower control arm ball joints can experience a loss of lubrication that can lead to corrosion, accelerated wear, and possibly separation from the steering knuckle. A ball joint, which has separated from the knuckle, could result in loss of vehicle directional control with minimal advanced warning and could result in a crash. Dealers will replace the front lower control arm ball joints with modified assemblies and heat shields on vehicles built between January 2, 2001 and October 4, 2002. On vehicles built between October 5, 2002 and March 26, 2003, dealers will inspect the ball joint assemblies (and replace as necessary) and install heat shields. The manufacturer has not yet provided an owner notification schedule for this campaign. Owners should contact DaimlerChrysler at 1-800-992-1997.
Recall date: Not reported
Units potentially affected: 826,687
NHTSA campaign number: 06V288000
Defective part or component: SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM:LOWER BALL JOINT
Description: On certain trucks, the constant tension front lower ball joints may experience contamination. If the vehicle is operated for an extended period with this condition, the ball joint may eventually experience wear and looseness. When the driver continues to operate the vehicle with this condition, the contamination can lead to corrosion, accelerated wear and possibly separation from the steering knuckle causing a loss of vehicle steering control increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will replace the front lower ball joints free of charge. The recall is expected to begin during September 2006. Owners should contact DaimlerChrysler at 1-800-853-1403.

New Car Test Drive Review

Category: Review:
Summary:

Improved safety for 2003.
By Mitch McCullough, Editor-in-Chief, NewCarTestDrive.com

The Jeep Liberty strikes a good balance between off-road capability and on-road sophistication. It's a good choice for drivers who like to venture into the backcountry, but need comfort and practicality in a daily driver.

Its go-anywhere capability is what separates the Liberty from other small SUVs. Though slightly less agile on the road than the car-based cute-utes, such as the Ford Escape and Toyota RAV4, the Liberty is vastly superior once you leave the pavement.

Overview:

The Jeep Liberty offers a great balance for someone who enjoys the outdoors. On the highway the Liberty is quiet and responsive. Turn off the pavement and it can go just about anywhere. It can carry five people and their gear. Fold the rear seats and it can move some serious cargo.

Introduced as a 2002 model, the Jeep Liberty is significantly revised for 2003. Better brakes, a lowered suspension, a revised automatic transmission, and new convenience features improve safety, drivability, and comfort. A new Renegade model, introduced late in 2002, is available in a premium trim level with leather for 2003. New wheels and new colors freshen the appearance of the 2003 models.

True to Jeep heritage, the Liberty stands apart from the new generation of less-capable compact sport-utility vehicles. It doesn't ride or handle as well as some of them on the road. But the Liberty is among the best of the small sport-utilities for drivers who need serious off-road capability on the weekend, and refinement, practicality, and affordability during the week.
