<p>The Hyundai Elantra was redesigned for the 2001 model year.</p> <p>The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has evaluated the crashworthiness of the Elantra in three 40 mph frontal offset crash tests into deformable barriers. After the first test, Hyundai indicated the dummy's lower leg injury measures were different from those recorded in tests the company had conducted and requested a retest. Results of the second test were somewhat improved for lower leg injuries, but a high right foot acceleration occurred. More significantly, the airbag deployed late, contributing to poor head injury measures. A third test was conducted after Hyundai could find no evidence of a problem in the airbag deployment sensing system and suggested the late deployment might have been anomalous. However, the airbag also deployed late in the third test. Due to the similarity of results, the evaluation of the Hyundai Elantra is based on all three tests.</p>
In the first test, dummy movement was reasonably well controlled, although the dummy's head did hit the steering wheel through the frontal airbag. During rebound, the deployed side airbag kept the dummy's head away from the B-pillar. In the second test, the frontal airbag deployed late (76 milliseconds, compared with a typical 30 milliseconds), and the dummy's head hit the steering wheel. Also, the driver seat came loose on one of its tracks and moved forward 3 inches on the right side, where the safety belt is anchored. Both of the dummy's legs jammed against the instrument panel. The left shin contacted an exposed metal edge, and the right knee hit just below the ignition switch, producing gashes in the "vinyl" skin at the dummy's left shin and right knee. During rebound, the deployed side airbag kept the dummy's head away from the B-pillar. In the third test, the frontal airbag also deployed late (64 milliseconds), and the dummy's head hit the steering wheel through the airbag. The side airbag did not deploy in this test, and during rebound the dummy's head hit the B-pillar.
Measures taken from the chest in all three tests indicate a low risk of injuries to this body region in a crash of this severity. In all three tests, forces on the head indicate that injuries to the head would be likely. In the second and third tests, forces on the neck indicate that injuries to the neck would be possible. A high head acceleration occurred when the head hit the B-pillar in the third test, indicating that another injury to the head would be possible. In all three tests, forces on both tibias indicate that injuries to the lower legs would be possible. Forces on the right foot in the second test indicate that injuries to the right foot would be likely.

On certain passenger and sport utility vehicles, the rear brake tubes pass behind the front suspension crossmember. Two steering gearbox mounting brackets are welded to the crossmember. On vehicles equipped with an antilock brake system (abs), the rear brake tubes could contact both steering gearbox mounting brackets. On vehicles that are not equipped with abs, the rear brake tubes may contact only the left mounting bracket. Contact between the rear brake tubes and the steering brackets could cause wear and corrosion that could result in brake fluid leakage. Fluid leakage could result in reduced braking capability increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will reposition the rear brake tubes so they do not contact the mounting brackets, install brake tube clips to control the location of the rear brake tubes, and apply anti-corrosion material to the tubes in the areas where contact with the mounting brackets may have occurred. Owner notification is expected to begin during the third quarter of 2003. Owners should contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151.

If that occurred, there is a possibility that the fuel spillage may exceed the limits established by Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 301, Fuel System Integrity. The Hyundai Elantra is one of the best subcompacts available. It's more comfortable and more enjoyable to drive than many of the name-brand cars in its class. There's very little about it that seems cheap. The Elantra is quieter than the Honda Civic. In the workaday grind the Elantra GT is better than acceptable. It's good. It can run with comparably equipped competitors in nearly every respect except the size of the monthly payments, where it runs ahead.Hyundai has made big gains in reliability and build quality, and any concerns in that regard are eased by a comprehensive warranty and roadside assistance plan. Measured by the price-benefit ratio, the Elantra is arguably the best bargain in its class. We strongly urge anyone who puts a premium on value to put this Hyundai on their test-drive list. |

The Hyundai Elantra is handsome, comfortable, versatile, and fun to drive. It would be a decent car if it cost thousands more. For under $15,000, it's a genuine bargain. Elantra comes with one of the most powerful standard engines in the subcompact class, and is among the quickest. It handles as well or better than the other cars in its class and has the sporty feel we like in a compact. The interior is nicely finished and more comfortable than most of the cars in its class, including the big name brands. The list of standard equipment is as long or longer than that of cars that cost thousands more, and includes side airbags. Measured by build quality, it meets or beats most of its competitors. We believe it will surpass most buyers' expectations. Sedan and hatchback models are available, the latter combining the practical advantages of a small wagon with the sleek look of a sedan. The hatchback is hard to beat for its functionality and its good looks, but most American buyers prefer sedans. So for 2003, the Elantra GT is available with either the sedan or hatchback body style. Concerned about reliability? Hyundai's warranty is one of the best available. The basic warranty lasts five years or 60,000 miles for the original owner, with free roadside assistance throughout. The engine and transmission are warranted for 10 years or 100,0000 miles; and Hyundai protects Elantra from rust-through for five years or 100,000 miles.
