Important: Frontal crash test ratings can be compared only among vehicles of similar weight.
The Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town and Country were redesigned for the 2001 model year.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has evaluated the crashworthiness of the Grand Caravan in three 40 mph frontal offset crash tests into deformable barriers. After the first test, DaimlerChrysler indicated the results were different from tests the company had conducted and requested a retest.

Results of the second test were more consistent with company test results for structural performance, but the amount and pattern of intrusion were similar. More significantly, a fuel leak occurred, revealing a weakness in the design of a circular fitting where the fuel lines exit the fuel tank. Further examination of the fitting in the van tested first showed stress fractures in the same area as the leak in the second van.

A third test was conducted after DaimlerChrysler made a design change to fix the fuel tank fitting and retrofitted a 2001 model with the redesign (all 2002 and later models include the modification). Examination of the redesigned fitting after the third test indicated no damage.
Dummy movement was well controlled in all three tests, except there was too much upward steering wheel movement in the second test. Measures taken from the neck and chest in all three tests indicate low risk of injuries to these body regions in a crash of this severity. A high acceleration occurred when the dummy's head hit the steering wheel through the airbag in the first and second tests, indicating that injuries to the head would be possible. Forces on the left tibia indicate that injuries to the lower leg would be possible in the first and third tests. Forces on the right tibia and foot indicate that injuries to the lower leg and foot would be likely in all three tests. 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan Sport 4224 front seat-mounted combination head and torso airbags (in first and third vans tested, none in second van tested) 119 200 79 3.3 L V6 18 24

New Car Test Drive Review

Category: Review:
Summary:

The luxury of versatility.
By Mitch McCullough, Editor-in-Chief, NewCarTestDrive.com

Chrysler Town & Country is among the best minivans available. Chrysler wrote the book on minivans and the Chrysler Group has sold more than 9 million minivans since 1983; it continues to dominate the market, outselling GM and Ford by a two-to-one margin, and outselling Honda by nearly four-to-one.

This new Town & Country shows why. It's roomy, comfortable, practical, powerful and nimble. Order the Limited model and add the word luxurious to that list.

Overview:

For some people, luxury means a deserted beach, a bottle of sunscreen, a new mystery novel, leaving everything behind. For others, luxury means traveling with all the comforts of home. If you fit in the latter category, if you're certain that luxury means never having to say, "I'm sorry, but there isn't enough room to take that with us," then Chrysler built the Town & Country for you.

With its responsive engine, smooth, quiet ride, upscale appointments and power accessories, the Chrysler Town & Country drives like a refined luxury vehicle. But it also offers seating for seven (available in leather, of course) and cavernous cargo space, so nothing (and no one) will ever have to be left behind. You can even order Town & Country with all-wheel-drive. How much more luxury can you stand?

Okay, some upmarket SUVs make similar claims. But the Town & Country does it without the excess weight and bulk. It even fits in your garage. You enjoy the same chair-height seating as your SUV-driving neighbors, but with a low, flat floor, so you don't need a ladder to climb in. And you don't need to be a Houdini to squeeze into the third-row seats, either. Once in, the Town & Country delivers better handling than most of those truck-based SUVs. And it costs less than most of them.

Chrysler last redesigned the Town & Country for 2001, and it remains among the best minivans on the market. The interior is versatile with seats that fold and remove. Powerful V6 engines deliver crisp performance. The ride is smooth and quiet. And it's wrapped in an attractive design.

For 2003, Chrysler has added standard equipment at most trim levels, an optional power sunroof, and three new option packages for the Town & Country LX. Power adjustable pedals are expected to be available late in 2003.
