Rollover Resistance Rating 3 of 5

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) provides 3 different ratings - full-width frontal crash test , side impact crash test , and rollover resistance . The frontal crash test indicates how well the safety features and restraints will protect an occupant in a head-on collision. The side-impact test conveys the chance of a severe chest injury, while the rollover resistance rating estimates the risk of rolling over in a single vehicle crash. Go to NHTSA to learn more about these results.

Overall Evaluation M

Injury Measures
Head/Neck A
Chest A
Leg/foot, left G
Leg/foot, right P
Restraints/dummy kinematics A
Important: Frontal crash test ratings can be compared only among vehicles of similar weight.
The Chevrolet TrailBlazer was introduced in the 2002 model year as a larger, heavier replacement for the Blazer, which remained in production through the 2004 model year. Similarly, the GMC Envoy and Oldsmobile Bravada were redesigned for 2002, replacing entirely their earlier, smaller versions.

Structural, seat belt, and frontal airbag changes were made beginning with 2005 models to improve occupant protection in frontal crashes. Therefore, the frontal offset ratings for 2002-04 models do not carry over to 2005 and later models.
Dummy movement was reasonably well controlled. During rebound, the dummy's head extended part way out the open window and hit the B-pillar. Measures taken from the neck and left leg indicate low risk of injuries to these body regions in a crash of this severity. A high head acceleration occurred when the dummy's head hit the B-pillar, indicating that injuries to the head would be possible. Forces on the chest indicate that injuries to the chest would be possible. Forces on the right tibia indicate that injuries to the lower leg would be likely. 2002 Chevrolet TrailBlazer LS 4544 front seat-mounted torso airbags 113 192 75 4.2 L 6-cylinder 15 21

Recall date: 08-09-2002
Units potentially affected: 133,221
NHTSA campaign number: 02V222000
Defective part or component: INTERIOR SYSTEMS:PASSENGER RESTRAINTS:AIR BAG:FRONTAL
Description: Certain passenger, mini vans, and sport utility vehicles have an air bag inflator on the driver's side that could fracture at a weld during a deployment. Pieces of the inflator could strike and injure vehicle occupants and the air bag cushion would not inflate fully, reducing the capability of the bag to protect the driver. Dealers will inspect, and replace, if necessary, the air bag module assembly on the driver's side. Owner notification began August 15, 2002. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact Buick at 1-800-521-7300, Cadillac at 1-800-458-8006, Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020, GMC at 1-800-462-8782, Oldsmobile at 1-800-442-6537, or Pontiac at 1-800-762-2737.
Recall date: Not reported
Units potentially affected: 511,167
NHTSA campaign number: 03V075000
Defective part or component: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
Description: CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 114, ""THEFT PROTECTION."" THESE VEHICLES ARE EQUIPPED WITH A MECHANICAL OVERRIDE THAT COULD ALLOW THE IGNITION KEY TO BE REMOVED WITH THE SHIFT LEVER IN A POSITION OTHER THAN PARK. IN ADDITION, THESE VEHICLES HAVE AN OVERRIDE THAT CAN ALLOW THE TRANSMISSION TO BE SHIFTED OUT OF PARK WITH THE IGNITION IN THE OFF POSITION. THESE OVERRIDES ARE NOT PERMITTED UNLESS THE VEHICLE HAS A LOCKING STEERING COLUMN. DEALERS WILL ELIMINATE THESE CONDITIONS BY DISABLING THE OVERRIDES. OWNER NOTIFICATION IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING APRIL 2003. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-222-1020, GMC AT 1-800-462-8782, OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-442-6537, OR HUMMER AT 1-866-486-6376.
Recall date: Not reported
Units potentially affected: 44,653
NHTSA campaign number: 03V151000
Defective part or component: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:FOUNDATION COMPONENTS:HOSES, LINES/PIPING, AND FITTINGS
Description: CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES WERE BUILT WITH A LEFT-FRONT BRAKE PIPE WITH A CIRCUMFERENTIAL SCORE AT A RANDOM LOCATION ALONG THE LENGTH OF THE PIPE AS THE RESULT OF THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS. IF THE BRAKE PIPE AT THE SCORING LOCATION CORRODED TO THE POINT THAT THE BRAKE PIPE WALL BECAME VERY THIN, AND APPLICATION OF THE BRAKE DEVELOPED ENOUGH PRESSURE TO PARTIALLY OR FULLY FRACTURE THE BRAKE PIPE, BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL WOULD IMMEDIATELY INCREASE AND FRONT BRAKE PERFORMANCE WOULD BE REDUCED. OR, IF THE BRAKE PIPE WALL AT THE SCORING LOCATION PARTIALLY OR FULLY FRACTURED DUE TO A COMBINATION OF PRESSURE, VIBRATION, OR TEMPERATURE INDUCED FATIGUE, THE BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL WOULD IMMEDIATELY INCREASE AND FRONT BRAKE PERFORMANCE WOULD BE REDUCED. IN THESE INSTANCES, BRAKING WOULD BE LIMITED TO THAT AVAILABLE WITH THE REMAINING HALF SYSTEM (REAR BRAKES). IF THIS OCCURS WHEN STOPPING DISTANCE IS LIMITED, A CRASH COULD OCCUR. DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE LEFT-FRONT BRAKE PIPE. GM HAS NOT YET PROVIDED AN OWNER NOTIFICATION SCHEDULE. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-222-1020, GMC AT 1-800-462-8782, OR OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-442-8006.
Recall date: Not reported
Units potentially affected: 1,707,825
NHTSA campaign number: 03V250000
Defective part or component: EQUIPMENT:OTHER:OWNERS/SERVICE/OTHER MANUAL
Description: Certain minivans, passenger and sport utility vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 225, ""child restraint anchorage system."" The owner's manual does not explain the meaning of the location symbols for the lower universal anchorage system. This does not meet the requirements of the standard. Owners will be provided with a supplement for their owner's manual. It describes and shows the location symbols for the child restraint anchors that are located in the vehicle. Owner notification is expected to begin during August 2003. Owners should contact Buick at 1-866-608-8080, Cadillac at 1-866-982-2339, Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438, GMC at 1-866-996-9463, Pontiac at 1-800-620-7668, or Oldsmobile at 1-800-630-6537.
Recall date: Not reported
Units potentially affected: 581,394
NHTSA campaign number: 04V046000
Defective part or component: VISIBILITY:WINDSHIELD WIPER/WASHER
Description: Certain sport utility vehicles have windshield wiper systems that will not turn on, cease operation while in use, fail to turn off/on by themselves (moisture sensitive wiper system), or have continuous windshield washer pump operation because the presence of water within the wiper modules can either cause a short circuit or can lead to the corrosion of components within the module. Depending on the occurrence and weather situation, driver visibility could be reduced, which could result in a crash. Dealers will cover the windshield wiper module vent hole with a patch. Also, the wiper motor, circuit board, and electrical connector will be inspected to signs of water intrusion and/or corrosion and be replaced as required. Owner notification is expected to begin during the third quarter of 2004. Owners should contact Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438; Oldsmobile at 1-800-630-6537; or GMC at 1-866-996-9463.
Recall date: 11-22-2004
Units potentially affected: 871,473
NHTSA campaign number: 04V527000
Defective part or component: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS
Description: On certain sport utility vehicles, vibration and heat may cause the tail lamp/stop lamp bulb to loosen in its socket. If this occurs, the bulb may flicker and eventually become inoperative. An inoperative brake lamp will not convey the drivers intention of stopping to drivers in following vehicles, and an inoperative rear turn signal lamp will not convey the driver's intention to turn to drivers in following vehicles. Both of these failures can increase the risk of a crash. Dealers will inspect the tail lamp/stop lamp assemblies, and if necessary, replace them. The recall began on November 22, 2004. Owners should contact Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438, Oldsmobile at 1-800-630-6537, Buick at 1-866-608-8080, or GMC at 1-866-996-9463.
Recall date: Not reported
Units potentially affected: 286,478
NHTSA campaign number: 05V198000
Defective part or component: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:TURN SIGNAL
Description: On certain trucks and sport utility vehicles, the driver wishing to signal a turn by moving the directional signal lever, (up or down) may cause the front marker/turn lights and rear turn lights to flash in a manner similar to hazard warning, rather than flashing on the desired side only. The driver may not be able to clearly signal their intentions to turn, change travel lanes, or potentially warn others of an impaired vehicle operating condition increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will replace the suspect flasher modules with a new flasher module designed with sealed relays and more durable contact material inside of the relays. The recall is expected to begin during August 2005. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438, GMC at 1-866-996-9463, Isuzu at 1-800-255-6727, Buick at 1-866-608-8080, and Oldsmobile at 1-800-630-6537.

New Car Test Drive Review

Category: Review:
Summary:

A trailblazing approach to the mid-size SUV.
By Sam Moses, NewCarTestDrive.com

Chevy TrailBlazer is among the best of the mid-size SUVs. Smooth, stable, and powerful, it works well around town, on the open highway, and in the back country. Almost none of that applies to the long-wheelbase TrailBlazer EXT, however.

TrailBlazer sports a nice design and a well-executed interior, though GM's seats could use some improvement.

Overview:

Chevrolet TrailBlazer is smooth and powerful, with a stunning straight-six engine, a stiff chassis, a sophisticated suspension, powerful brakes and impressive details. It's capable of off-road travel, but feels stable and comfortable on the highway.

For 2003, the TrailBlazer adds an extended-wheelbase model with seating for seven, and an optional all-aluminum V8 for more towing power. The fuel tank is larger. And there's even a new North Face Edition with exclusive interior and exterior trim.

The V8 delivers strong torque for towing, but the six-cylinder engine delivers plenty of power for the TrailBlazer. The long-wheelbase TrailBlazer EXT sacrifices handling for third-row seating.
